So I've been thinking for a while that I wanted to mount the GPS up high and very close to my line of sight when I'm the bike. I did have it mounted on the handlebars but I felt I had to look away from the road for too long when using it.

So this is my thinking. Got a couple of 1m x 20mm x 4mm steel bars from B&Q and made two extension bars that mounted to my MRA screen brackets.

Next I got a length of bar, cut it and bent into shape. Used M8 bolts to attach it to the lower extension bars.

Next I traced the shape of the upper bar onto some 2mm aluminium sheet. Then cut it out.

Lastly before I nipped into work, I placed the GPS roughly where I think it will be mounted.

Update.....

Riveted the aluminium cover to the steel frame with some right-angle aluminium brackets. I've drilled two holes in the cover to hold a couple of powerlet power points.

Also made up a couple of brackets to hole the 8mm bar on which the GPS will be mounted.

I'm thinking of mounting a row of switches along the bottom of the cover for my aux lights etc. I'll leave that for another day though.

Just needs to be painted now.....

I hate to put a spanner in the works but don't you know you are not supposed to do this sort of thing yourself... you are supposed to consult the telephone directory and spend a big wad on "accessorising"... How will you face your R12 riding mates.... Oh yeah, you've got an 11:D:D

I don't use a GPS very often but it's great for in towns. I have my earpiece in so i don't have to keep staring especially if it's sunny. Sort of alarm call for the important bits:D

Nice one...:thumb2

Well now not all 1200 riders have TT,Wunderlich etc bling money, some go the DIY route.

This is my Sat Nav mount been on both my 12's so thats nearly 6 years and never caused a problem.

That has to be one of the best 'positioned' gps gadget I've seen. well done.

Thanks.

There just wasn't anywhere else to put it!
The brackets that came with the TT mount put the unit just over the handle bar clamps,in the way of the keys and obscured by a tankbag. This set up I can see the screen AND the road too.

I'm happy it.

Good stuff... always more satisfying when you work it out for yourself. I stuck my car one in one of those Aquabox things and it works for me oof the bars. I do listen as much as look though...

Not sure blanking out so much forward view is such a good idea. Why did you feel the need to sheet over the whole thing?

Doesn't make a difference really. I'm considering spraying the inside of the windscreen black as I never look through it - always look over the top or to the sides.

It was easiest to just cover with a sheet of alloy to hold the powerlet power points, switches and the GPS bar brackets.

Really nice job Essjay, fair dues.

If you keep this up that 1100 will soon look as good as your old bike :D

Hi.
What kind of windscreens do you have on your bike with this mod?
I'am not sure that the lower windscreen is stock.

The upper windscreen is DIY?

Thanks for the answer.

Its a standard MRA screen, looks like the bottom is sprayed black though.
