I have a problem that seems to be effecting only my netbook. :(

I am trying to get to http://cottagesmallholder.com but it fails on ALL my web browsers with errors such as Could not locate remote server, or DNS lookup fail.

I know other people can access it as can I on my phone. I've done an IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS but that didn't help.

I am using a THREE MiFi and thought that the problem might be with THREE but my phone can connect ok through that. :thumb2

It is only this one site I am unable to get to.

Any ideas anyone? :nenau
Thanks.

thats strange its hosted outside bradford 188.227.165.141 thats its ip i thought i would find it some where dodgy and ISP had there ip address Blocked

whos your ISP you may be able to add a proxy DNS aslo check to see if malware has altered your DNS settings from your default ISP ones

If it gets right on your t*ts and the problem just wont go:

Edit this bas*ard:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and add a line:

188.227.165.141 cottagesmallholder.com www.cottagesmallholder.com

..save the file (BE CAREFUL Notepad or your fave editor doesn't add a .txt extension, the file is hosts - NOT hosts.txt)!

You shouldn't need a restart, but you might.

That ought to do it. :thumb2

Usually malware changes aren't confined to one site, but it would be worth checking the proxy server settings are off on your browser.

Can you try a different browser on your netbook? What OS is it running?

Using Windows Xp (home).

Yes tried all Browsers on my Netbook; Chrome, Opera, IE. no go.
Started happening two days ago.
Nothing changed on the Netbook that I know of.
Not using proxies.
No malware etc reported.

I have tried pinging it and nslookup but that fails to find it as well.
Still only the one site that is having problems.

Just tried connecting my netbook to a tethered hot spot on my phone and it works perfectly.

Connecting the netbook to the MiFi wireless or via cable does not work.

However, connecting the phone to the MiFi via wireless DOES work and I can access the website

Very confused

Tried amending the hosts file as per above?

Have you tried changing the DNS server settings on your network adapter? Try using:

8.8.8.8
and
8.8.4.4

Sorry, that didn't work either :(

..and after you edited the file, can you definitely confirm it is named "hosts" and it has absolutely no extension on it?

Here is a another test to make sure the hosts file is being used...

1: Edit that entry you added and set the IP to 192.168.0.99 instead of the one I specified above.

2: Save the file (make sure it is named hosts, not hosts.txt)

3. Bring up a command prompt (Start / Run / Cmd)

4. Type ping cottagesmallholder.com

5. What "reply from" appears? Is it replying with the 192.168. address?

Just tried the www. and none-www. approach to reaching that site. I too get problems getting to it.

I'd be checking the domain DNS setup and check the "A" records, there is something quite wrong there.

Haven't had time to try anything since adding the line to the Hosts file...

However I can now get to the website on my netbook :thumb2

Thanks for all the suggestions guys :beerjug:

If anyone can explain why only one address failed from one computer/provider and not another I'd be really impressed :D

Still unavailable from here.

I hope the website owner isn't hoping to reach the MASSES with that DNS setup? ('Cos its fecked) :D

It didn't stay available for long :(

However it is back properly now. Apparently the IP had screwed up the DNS. :D
