do you think i need new coils....pics...

If you are interested in buying a complete set of four used/serviceable PM me

mines a 2005....looking on ebay for second hand cos new would hurt....
i think these are the same for most early models

mines on 53.000....you can see the state of them and are the original set....
they still seem to work ok but ive recently developed a hesitation on acceleration..only happens once in a while...
starting with replacing coils and plugs....

Do the primaries smell of hot or burnt plastic? If no they are probably fine. The secondaries could be replaced with car stick coils (three wire type) and HT lead.

no smell as far as i can tell....rides ok just sometimes hesitates when opening up....
one thing ive just noticed..once fully warmed up....if i open up the throttle quickly from tick over it takes a second to rev up cleanly...lumpy for a split second then revs up...
ive got coils and new plugs on the way to me so will see if that improves it...

You can't judge them by what they look like - I've seen immaculate coils that have failed and sticks of rust that work perfectly.

My primaries looked fine but the engine was running horribly rich. Once I realised both coils were failing it all made sense. The ECU was adding more fuel to make up for the unused oxygen caused by the missing sparks. The O2 sensors can't measure unburnt hydrocarbons.

Check your spark plugs if the colour is good its probably not an ignition problem.

i would say all 4 spark plugs looked the same...very black and sooty...very rich which might be the cause of the hesitation....
i know primary and secondary coils are working as ive unplugged top and bottom spark plugs...
runs and starts ok...got new plugs and coils on way.will see if that makes a differance..

Black and sooty plugs does hint at failing primary coils. They do fail in pairs - mine packed up totally within 10 miles of each other. Im still running the original secondaries.

When the ancient secondaries fail, I'm using car stick coils (3 wire type) with HT leads.

Pics please :), if its a car stick coil, why cant you just put the coil straight onto the plug ??

got coils on way from a member here...new plugs and air filter on way....
will see........the next thing ill look at if these dont fix it will be the tps....

nightmare

Ive had murder with my 05 the last couple of years,

rough running, lumpy tickover, intermitant misfireing, slow to spin up, changed coils for supposedly known good ones etc.changed everything else on intake side, lamdas etc etc.

at the end of my tether i coughed up £350 on a new set.

looks like that was the problem:bounce1

Car coils will fit the plug but almost certainly too long.
They won't work on secondaries because they don't have the angled end.
Run an HT lead from the coil business end to spark plug cap. Fit adapter lead from coil driver plug to car coil. Jobs a goodun.

new plugs...air filter...new second hand coils fitted....
took it for a 40 mile round trip and so far so good...
now when i rev up quickly no lumpyness....instant revs....felt smoother
took plugs out when it cooled down and they look great...not black and sooty like the old set....
is a 40 mile trip enough to show the fueling or will it need more miles to accuratly show....
time will tell now if my hesitation has gone but promising so far.....

Looks like it
Runs smoother at lower revs now and throttle response instant
Time well tell
