First thing I would check is the polarity of your cigarette lighter power adapter as these can usually be altered.
The ipod uses 5v to charge. Unless its connected by FW, which I think is 12v, but not sure.

I read that the ipod charges on either 5v off the USB or 12v via a charger
how does that work then

I would think the cig charger incorporates a step-down to 5v or it would fry the ipod
