Hi all,

Apologies....I'm rotten at electrics so forgive the dumb question but - my '05 1150GSA has decided to intermittently stop charging. Does this mean a dodgy alternator or might fitting a new voltage regulator fix the issue?

Many thanks,

Bert

Many thanks - I'll investigate...might be brushes...or am hoping so..... Will look for Steptoe's sticky. Bit of a Luddite on tech.

Mine stopped charging recently, so I stripped the alternator out from the top of the engine.

Brushes are integral with the reg/rec on the top/back of the casing and mine were still really good, so I checked continuity in the 3 sets of windings on the outer coils and the inner windings between the two slip rings. All were good so I cleaned up the contacts and mounting points before refitting and testing it. All worked perfectly, so I suspect the earthing was intermittent.

I hope yours is as straightforward…:thumb2

Thanks Paul. V helpful. I'm leaning toward it being something as straightforward - going to spend my weekend investigating. On we go.....!

Check the single blue wire that attaches to the alternator, I’ve seen a few badly corroded with any wire barely left
