Symptoms for faulty voltage regulator ?

It might sound silly, but pull ya fuel pump out and replace the U link pipe. I had very similar issues with an 1150 and it turned out to be the U pipe. They are expensive, but if it's never been changed the chances are it could be collapsing under load. Mine looked fine btw. Fuel fliter might as well get replaced whilst in there. Lots of people avoid doing anything in the tank thanks to the tiny studs which can break off if rusted up. Take your time, soak with penetrating oil and they should be fine.

Well worth a look.. From symptoms it may be fuel starvation..

You don't have to open the tank to check the innards. Just measure the volume of fuel returning to the tank at idle. It should be 2 liters per minute.

Well, I guess I am not the 'sharpest pencil in the box', but before I take the bike to the mechanic in utter frustration, I tested my coil and HT leads with my cheap voltmeter.
With this set at the lowest setting of 200 ohms I got a reading of 4.4 across the primary terminals.
With the voltmeter on the 20 kohms setting I got a reading of 7.25 across the secondary terminals. These readings are nothing like the specified settings of o.5 ohms and 13 kohms respectively. However these are similar to the readings of the old coil I replaced and in the end there was nothing wrong with that! I suspect I am operating/ reading the voltmeter incorrectly.
The resistance of my American aftermarket silicon leads from Euromotoelectrics was the same at 1.01 kohms and they were undamaged. Two sets of old OEM leads showed varying and much higher resistances around 5 - 6 kohms.
Unless anyone can tell me otherwise, I suspect that as suggested my problem is fuel related. I will re examine the fuel pipes in the tank.

I should really find something much more basic to tinker with.............a skateboard perhaps or maybe I should take up gardening or just dribble in front of the morning tv......

Turn the lights out and try too run the bike in complete darkness.

Have a look around the HT leads to see if they are signs of insulation breaking down. Clearly visible in the dark by HT jumping from the leads to the nearest earth point.

Don't be too hard on yourself. We have all been there at some stage. JJH

I'm there constantly, and although frustrating, you are finding your way around your bike, and getting to know it better, which is no bad thing.
I'ts all good experience even if you do end up seeking professional help.
Press on and good luck. :thumby:

Check the resistance across the injector terminals, should be around 16 ohms... readings much higher or lower and i'd buy a used injector and see the difference :D

A friend had a long term problem with his Kawasaki which turned out to be faulty insulation on then combined coil/spark plug caps. All the resistance readings on the coils were within range but he found the problem by resting the coil against the side of the engine block to test the spark plugs and saw sparks between the plastic of the coil case and the engine. He cured the problem temporally (until new coils arrive) by wrapping electrical tape around the coil casting.

Or the manly way....leave the lights on. Grab hold of the frame with one hand and have a feel round the HT leads with the other.
Soon tell if any ziggies are escaping.

Still think it sounds like a plug breaking down.

Right all, I have now got over my little 'dizzy' fit. Steptoe, thank you for your suggestion. I think you may be right. I am getting varying/ inconsistent readings across the terminals of both injectors, the left one especially so. I solved a previous ignition problem when I had both injectors cleaned/ refurbished just last summer. Perhaps they were only temporarily fixed and have degenerated again, perhaps through internal corrosion. I will try and source some new ones I think, if I can find a good price!!!!!!!

Regards...
