Does Basecamp overwrite Mapsource? Urgent help needed

Google Earth will display Mspsource derived routes and tracks quite happily.

The earliest versions of MS didn't handle the KML/Z files properly.
MS suffered the same user-resistance, hiccups, glitches and cross-platform problems which folk are expressing nowadays with BaseCamp; you were all willing Beta-testers for Garmin. So, no change there :D.

Also, IIRC, user tools were very limited on the early release versions of GE, too – so I doubt very much the "import" facility was in GE in those days.

I gave up on MS as soon as BC arrived.

Whilst I don't think I can be called a Luddite ( had my first mobile in 1988, my first bike sat nav in 2003) I do, nowadays, look first before taking on a superposed improved versions. I am very happy that there are folks willing to struggle with Basecamp and hopefully help develop it. For me I do try to reduce my stress levels where possible and, as Mapsource works for me, I will continue to use it. I guess having used it fairly intensively for nearly 11 years I am used to it. For me, right now, it does a better job than Basecamp. When that situation changes I dare-say I will use it, until then there is, from my point of view, little point. This is,of course, a personal view, nothing more or less than my opinion and therefore carries with it as much or as little weight as you lot care to give it.

Each to their own, bud.
Given that I've been working with satellite navigation on different applications for well over thirty years, now - I'd say I've probably forgotten more than most people will ever know.
Ride safe.

Just installed, basecamp and mapsource to new laptop running windows 8. Both latest sets of maps installed manually not on express. Also asked mapsource to update which it did to version mentioned above. Worth doing if you want to continue using it a bit longer. Downloading to computer shows up in both versions.
Have connected laptop to 32" television via hdmi and plotting routes at that size makes it a joy on mapsource.

I have also had me fourth go on Basecamp. Perseverance is paying off.:thumby:

I see no reason at all to use Basecamp, as long as Mapsource is available, I'll continue using that.
It's quick to use, and very simple... (a bit like me).

Well my attempt to download Garmin Express to my Notebook has failed. I downloaded the executable file and ran it, after agreeing to the Ts&Cs the next window asked me to browse for an installation location, having done that the only options are to either go Back or Exit....WTF?

So Back obviously takes me back to agreeing to the Ts&Cs and Exit does exactly that, exits from the installation routine?

Without Garmin Express it seems I am unable to download BC and the mapping update to MS.

Anybody any ideas on this please?

Try using the old 'Map Updater' that preceded the Express thing..

Here's another walk-through Garmin offered; it presumes you already have a Garmin account - hence the request to enter a valid email address....

Connect the device to the computer via USB cable.

1. Click http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

2. Click Download for Windows

3. Click Run

4. Click Run

5. Accept the terms then click Install

6. Click Launch

7. Click Skip Tour

8. Enter your email address then save device

9. Select the update available

10. Agree to the terms and conditions then select Install Now

11. Click ‘Select a region’

12. Click continue

13. Select the desired region, we recommend UK & Ireland

14. Click Device and change to Device and Computer

15. Click continue

Thanks guys, I have managed to download Garmin Express to the Notebook now, I was doing something stupid - DOH! Will connect the 660 today and try to download BC and the updates sometime today. :thumb2

Have managed to download BC to my Notebook now and updated the mapping on Mapsource to NT2013.3, haven't managed to update the mapping on the 660 though as there is not enough space on the unit or on the microSD card, probably cos I've filled it up with tunes for the MP3 player; so it looks like an investment in a bigger card to accomodate the upgrade. I noticed that there is also a 2014 version of the mapping available for £49, has anybody done that, is it worth it?

Anybody recommend any sites for purchasing microSD cards?

Amazon or eBay.

The £49 maps sounds like updates to me. Worth having for that price if it's lifetime and not just one update.
Worth paying a little more for lifetime.

I've given up on Base Camp on the Mac, using Road Trip now, not all the bells and whistles, but works and more intuitive than BC.

When you buy the lifetime update does it go with you if you change your unit in the future or is it only for the unit you have at the time?

It stops with the device.

However.. when my Zumo 550 packed up, and was sent to Garmin for repairs, they sent me (for £112) a brand new boxed 660, and transferred my lifetime maps over to the new unit.. :beerjug:

Yep, where Garmin exchange your GPS, either in or out of warranty, you do get the lifetime sub transferred. However, you can't upgrade to the latest device and carry your sub across to that.

Also the lifetime update sub. is based on the owner and the device. If you sell it the new owner can't take over and will need to buy a new subscription.

Garmin nuMaps Ts and Cs said:
Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product.

Not sure

Because map updates (including the nuMaps Lifetime subscription) do not require registration, they may still be accessed if the device is sold or given away.

Lifetime updates can be accessed outside of myGarmin by connecting the device to a computer and visiting the map update page on Garmin's website: http://www.garmin.com/mapupdates
