I'm curious on your options too! Was watching some stainless headers on eBay but went for £160+, so I'm thinking of the re chroming route - if you decide on new ones bear me in mind for your shoddy and downright crappy old ones

I think these are stainless. They had a lot of crap and discolouration in them but no corrosion. I suppose I could polish them. I like the look of exhaust wrap but its effectiveness seems controversial. Ceramic coating seems to be about £100... Can you still get Sperex VHT? :)
 
A professional polisher would charge about £30-£50 to take em back to new - worth a punt - looks better than tape IMHO, worse case is you spend £30 on polishing and you decide you don't like and you charge me £30 more! 🏻

The Staintune headers on my G/S are slightly magnetic.
I with clean them up Stainless Steel Magic scouring powder which removes the discoloring , and then polish them with Luster Lace polishing strips, which come in about 18" long strips and when wrapped round the pipes make cleaning a breeze, although it takes a bit of patience the first time.
 
Don't think I'm going to do the silver shiny thing. I've narrowed it down to ceramic or black chrome. :)

I haven't really decided what to do about the rest of the exhaust - I've got the silencer from Richie Moore and I've got the original headers but what to join them up with... I seem to remember the Paralever crowd having long discussions about the relative merits of various collector boxes and Y-pieces, does that apply to monos too? If so, what's the current thinking?
 
There are a few schools of thought. If going for a race bike then presumably one would just go for whatever Richie says. Lord knows he has spent enough money on dyno time to find out. Now with racing aside, I think the consensus at the moment is that the Keihan system is less than best. The Stock, or OEM collector seems to work better, in terms of torque and hp. Some of the Y-pieces that you can buy have weird 90 degree angles in them an as such do not let the gasses flow as easily as they should. There are a few threads on adv rider about custom y pieces and headers. Beamster in particular has a lovely y piece as does airheadwrangler. As an alternative, Paul Rooney in AUS makes a lovely looking collector that also forgoes the exhaust thus saving you weight. I think he also uses it on his race bikes. If you have the exhaust already bought and don't want to use it tell Richie that I'll buy it from him when he sends my stuff over if hes happy to hold on to it for as long as it takes for fab up my last bits and bobs.

Cheers for that. I am talking to Richie about it as it progresses and I will, of course, take his advice. It may even be that he wants me to use 40mm headers so I won't use the originals after all. I already have the 'silencer' from him and I will use that.

Unfortunately, practicality, and the positioning of other parts, means that the exhaust routing is going to be tight behind the gearbox so there will have to be some awkward bends - but that's life.

Anyone bent their own exhaust pipes? Is their a reasonably economical tube bender that can handle stainless tubing this size?

I'm not sure if too many people bend their own pipes... what I have seen though it people buy lots of short sections of pipe... some straight and some bent and then just weld them all together. I have no idea if that make sense but to me its different than buying one long piece and trying to bend it to wrap around everything. With that said... I've never bought metal before so have no idea how this works... but I'm guessing you buy a few 20 degree bends, maybe a 30, a 45 etc etc... :nenau

That does seem the most used route - and there are done stunning examples around. Just looking at the options really.

Okay, change of plan...

Following a conversation with Richie, this morning, the heads are going to be bored for 1 5/8" headers (41.3mm) - so none of the standard options will go.

I will now be making the entire thing - 31" headers, y-piece and 2" o/d outlet to the silencer. It'll all be 1.2mm 304 stainless

Decided to try a gas lens system on the TIG, which is supposed to give more reliable shielding - we'll see...
