Dogbytes' R80 ST project

Been watching this with interest since the start (and can't wait to see it finished in all its glory!)

If you do decide to go for cast wheels, can I be first in line to buy the spoked wheels you have for my ST ?

Thanks

Bubb

You're first on the list if I decided to sell them. However, for what they're worth, I'd probably keep them for a future project. :)

It was never going to work! Me and my eternal optimism...

I ended up reducing the rim diameter, heating the sleeve/extension up and all was well...

And here's one I prepared earlier...

Went together quite well in the end.

Exhaust wrap

A controversial item but I quite like it. In any case, it'll come off a lot quicker than it went on if I find I don't like it after all.

SO close!

Okay, we're almost there. Everything is back together except the exhaust, the fluids are in except for the fuel which sitting waiting.

Whilst I was sorting the last few bits out, I dropped the silencer off to a local fabricator so that I can have a flat on one edge for tyre clearance. Hopefully he'll finish it soon - like really soon.

First Bing tomorrow, I'll do the static timing and then, once silencer is back, I'll try to fire it up. :bounce1

I'll film the event for posterity - or as a warning to others! Delete as applicable.

Hi Dogbytes

When I spoke to RM about engine builds he sent me to your build thread which i did in one sitting very good reading, look forward to seeing the final stages come together live as it were.:D

You're just about to fire it up after all this time ........ Imagine that! :clap

Yeah, I know  it's taken so long we're nearly up to 81,000 views on this thread, it's embarrassing!

The next one will be done so quickly hardly anyone will even realise it's started! In fact I might buy the first bit of it today...

I was working as a Car salesman when you started this thread

So ...... can we make the next one a nice deep metallic :D

Well it started no problems at all. Very smooth, quieter than expected.

I have a movie but it won't let me upload. If anyone can tell me details of acceptable formats, etc. I'll upload it.

I was going to run it up the road for the amusement of all but it popped one of the oil cooler hoses out its socket and dropped half a pint of oil all over the pavement. I never liked those oil pipe couplings and now I don't trust them either! Might have to get some pre-assembled ones done - now I know the exact lengths.

It's back together now and I might try it again - after I've checked all the other oil unions!

Well it blew another oil line union - this time very messily, upwards and into the fairing. I was exceptionally well-behaved under the circumstances - perhaps I'm becoming more mature at last.:(

I can only assume that the fittings I bought were shit, as assembly really isn't that complicated. If I can remember who I got them from I'll give them a mention.

So, moving on, recommendations for AN8 oil cooler lines, capable of withholding the requisite pressure? Are decent self-assembly ones reliable or is it better to go for pre-assembled ones? Either way it ain't getting started again until I've done something about it!

PS If you've any ideas, don't be shy - I really want to take it up the road!
PPS The rev counter doesn't work, got to sort that out too - and I can't test it until I can start it and I can't start it until, well, see above...

Other than that, it's been a very good day:bounce1:clap

Richie called me this evening and recommends these people http://www.thinkauto.com/index.html

If it's good enough for Richie it's good enough for me, I'll call them in the morning.

Called them this morning and they're going to get a pair of pre-assembled hoses out to me ASAP - hopefully I'll get them tomorrow. Very nice people to deal with.

I do like nice, helpful people:beerjug:

Blowing the unions could also mean very high oil pressure.
Might be a good idea to fit an oil pressure guage in place of the sender and have a look at what she's pushing out.?

If the oil pressure was going to be unusually high then Richie Moore would know - since he built the motor. I think the fittings I got just aren't up to the job, to be honest, so we live and learn. An oil pressure gauge is a good idea anyway though, so I'll look into it. It may be something that the Acewell dash, that I'm using, can do if connected to a suitable sender. I'll look into it thus very evening.

I think your engine is a similar spec to mine. No issues with over pressure on mine so it must just be the unions.

I'm sure it's the unions.

I'm a trusting soul and if I see something that looks different from how I personally would have done it, I tend to imagine that the person who did it knows a bit more than I do about the subject. After 40 years of repairing equipment trashed by highly trained professionals and correcting the shoddy designs of some of those same equipments, you'd think I'd have learnt.

Rest assured that I will be following it up...
