there is a film about it.

About 6 years ago, a film "Tbe Byrlcream Boys" was made about the Curragh Camp & the British & German inmates thereof, but went straigt to DVD. Stiil available.

My late father joined the Irish Army during the Emergency and had great stories of the goings on in the Curragh of the various POW's and the relationships many made with local families. Hunting, going to the races passes to go to dinner and date local girls etc were the order of the day. Quite a few Germans married local girls and never returned to Germany after the war.

I went to the site this morning for a wee nosey but they seem to be finished digging so we went on over to Culdaff for a spot of lunch, there is a fair bit of interest from the locals, one was telling me he watched the engine being lifted out and the stench of fuel was still very strong he said they have got quite a few items out of the plane.
 
It's on BBC1 at 9pm Monday. just seen a clip of it. looks very interesting.
 
My son is a lucky bugger, he works for a local firm and rebuilds merlins day in and day out. All the BBMF spits and lanc engines come back here for rebuilds :eek: He spends hours up at raf kemble or the Cotswolds airport running them in and only last week he's up there working on a two seater converted spitfire getting the engine running correctly.

My dear late Dad probably knew your Dad as he was also stationed there during that time. I always thought he was joking when he said he used to go to the pictures with them. It's appears not bless him.

Artefacts

You all might be interested to know that you can presently see the artefacts from this excavation at the workhouse museum upstairs in the Waterside Library, at least it was all there last month. The Spitfire engine is at the door when you first come in, definitely worth a visit. Heres all the details of the museum so you can check it out yourselves in case anything has changed. I also noticed copies of the book in Easons (Derry) today as well for less than £9
