My bike was £8995 when new (I got a grand off by buying a leftover '07 model) I am looking at a £5200, nearly a 3k loss, add in extra's and it was an £11k bike that I got £6500 for.

I think a 2008 / 08 GS with extra's to the value of £11k when new would sell for considerably more than £6500, or put another way if I could get an 2008 1200Gs with luggage and comfort pack for £6500 I would be very happy right now!!!

You're right...well done....it took you 5 bikes to realise tho' .
However, if you keep one bike long enough you will get your value out of it.
but bikes are seen as toys these days, not as essential transport and in the world of easy finance people change their bikes as often as their underpants.

If you've only just seen that you will lose money on every transaction, then you need to get up to speed with life.
BMW aren't in it for fun, they are a company that makes millions....guess how ?

When I considered changing my 12GS after two years of ownership for the then new F800GS, my dealer offered me £5500 in p/x (12k and immaculate). That was almost a 50% drop from the new price of £10,100 which I paid in June '05. I too had been taken in by the old 'They hold onto their value' line. Plus I had done more than the average 3k a year which Glass's guide seems to state. So I decided to keep her for another while and eventually sold it last November privately. By then, she was almost four and a half years old, had almost 25k, still immaculate, and I priced her at £5200 which I got the very next day after advertising her through these hallowed pages. I probably could have got a bit more as the market seemed very boyant at that moment, but I felt that it was a good price to get the deal done as soon as. So over two years later, I only 'lost' another £300 compared to what the dealer was going to give me on a p/x for a brand new 800.

I believe I can say with mucho confidence, I'll never ever buy another new BMW, or any bike for that matter brand new again. Yes, there is a nice warm fuzzy feeling when you go to pick up your virginal bike, but I'll be more than happy to take the savings by letting others suffer the big hit of depreciation on their new pride and joy.

Similar. I think I've 'lost' about £1500 in 2 years and 20k on my 08 GS. Seems fine to me.

Buy it outright for £4k next year. Should have a few cents in it still.

Glasses guide seems to support the fact of good residuals on BMWs. Mind you, no bike is worth much in October compared with April.

Having never ever owned a brand new vehicle of either 2 or 4 wheeled variety I don't understand why anyone would buy one new and be surprised when it lost a Grand or 2 in value the second it rolled down the road from the dealers

Newest bike I have ever had was 3 years old and it cost me less than half what my mate bought his brand new one yet a year later we both sold and I lost a few hundred compared to his 2 grand .... Simples

I bought an ex demo 1200GS from Vines, 3 months old, 1000 miles on the clock.

Never bought a bike from a dealer but this was cheaper than any private bike I had seen - £8500

Did 15,000 in a year then gave it to my brother as a birthday present.

100% depreciation
