It would have been foolish of me to splash out a small fortune on a motorbike without even test riding it first...although I'm sure I could have, my girlfriend would have been less than pleased! :nono

So anyway I booked a test ride for last Friday, to try out the GS1200 and the new Adventure. I needed to see if, at 5' 9" tall, I could handle one of these monsters. I don't mind telling you that I was a little nervous, but with the nervousness came the excitment and a degree of 'I'm gonna do this, no matter what'. It was fairly chilly and very foggy on Friday morning, but I still managed to drag myself out of a nice warm duvet, onto my unfared bandit and rode the 40 miles to the showroom in Hertford. After a cup of coffee and a chat with one of the sales team, I was introduced to the GS1200 and it did look quite big. However, once I'd swung my leg over, it felt very comfortable and the engine sounded fantastic! Bearing in mind the icy, foggy, cold weather conditions and my relative inexperience, I felt entirely comfortable with the machine and confidence grew with every minute on the bike. The instant acceleration when openning the throttle, allowed me to exectue overtakes using a technique I'd learnt on advanced training..."point and shoot" is the name of the game with the GS. I loved the first gear, as it was not intimidating and could be used around town - all day! Needless to say, I returned to the dealer, with a stupid grin on my face.

...Next up was the 1200GS Adventure. Right then, there is no getting away from the fact that this is a very big bike. Not in terms of weight, but the seat height forces you to plan ahead and forced me to shift my arse over to get my foot down! Once on the move, I found that the Adventure gave me more comfort form the seat, better vision, better wind protection and more confidence when turning in, than on the standard GS. This Adventure had the panniers fitted and although they are wide, I still managed to filter through some heavy town traffic with comparative ease. I returned the bike, two hours later, unsure of which bike I would ultimately buy??? After another cuppa, a glass of water and a final wander around the car park, I did it! The deposit was swiped and I'd given myself the best Christmas present ever!

I don't have too much rationale on why I went for the 1200 Advenure, but I knew after 5 mins on the first GS that I was going to be going home with something. If I was that confident on a bike the size of the Adventure in a matter of minutes and in nasty weather conditions, with no experience of boxers, or trailies...what was it going to be like in the dry, after a couple of months on the beast?!? Fecking Fantastic! Oh my God, roll on March!!!!

I'll be very surprised if I haven't put well over 20,000 on it in the first year!!

Get one!!

I did the same as you test rode the GS then the Adv.
Knew I wanted the Adv within 200yards of starting off !!! Mine was a July order for mid Sept delivery & that was long enough !!

The hardest part now for you is the wait for delivery, and you will now go thru constant searching of the web for anything GS related to get you thru this difficult time till March comes around!!

It's the first bike I've had since my teens that I want to ride all the time.

You'll enjoy it when it comes - Good Luck

5'9? I should be so lucky  :D

Just wait until the trail bug bites....... lower seats, shorter shocks, clutch master cylinder protector, brake master cylinder protector, steering hard part, throttle potentiometer cover, two finger levers.........

Now, where's me Wunderlich catalogue?

Good post there Tim. :clap

I moved from a 1200 Bandit to my 1150GS two years ago and have never once regretted it, although at 6'2" the height thing wasn't a consideration for me at all. :)

March probably seems like a long time away now, but it won't be that long rolling around. In the meanwhile you have plenty of reading to catch up on here. :)

Enjoy. :thumb

Same thing happened to me ........

2 weeks ago I drifted onto the Adventurer for a test ride - I really knew in my heart I was going to get one , the test ride was academic really - they are so confidence inspiring, the extra bulk far from being a hinderance seems to add to the planted feel a GS already has - I couldnt make the logic work out as to how I could justify the best part of £5k to upgrade from the GS12 , so have resigned myself to forgetting about the dosh and focussing on the bike ... and I will have my grubby mits on it next week.

Funny, normally I am so sensible about getting the right thing at the right price - when it came to the GSA - that went right out of the window!

Enjoy yours ( And trawling through the cataloques for those (essential) upgrades and accessories):thumb

You will love it

Out on my GS!2 last friday and it feels good whatever the weather! The wait from Nov 05 to september 06 was awful ! I'd sold my 1150 GSA in oct 05 thinking I'd get the 12 asap ,so had to get a 1150 SE whilst waiting for the 12!! Its true ,once you've had one you feel naked without!! Roll on march for YA!!:thumb :beerjug:

Well done:thumb
I bought my 2004 1200 GS sight unseen when they first came out...

MIKE SA

I couldn't afford a brand new one, but got a used one in 2004 (ex-demo) and haven't looked back since. I'm tempted by the 1200Adv but the standard machine is so nimble on country roads plus I need a piss stop every 130 miles so petrol range isnt an issue, thus I am sticking with my bike for a few years yet (plus she's paid for and I hate debt).

I do think the 1200Adv looks the dogs conkers though, a proper blokes bike.:thumb
