Hello, I'm new here, please be gentle! I have a couple of thick questions. I've just bought a new (but 2007 model) 1200GS from the main dealer in Doha (Qatar). They seem to have misplaced the handbook so I've been working things out for myself. At least I know where the brakes, throttle and clutch are.

First; The bike has the standard seat which I find a bit high (just 5'7"). No low version available for me to try. I've noticed people on the forum talking about adjusting the seat's height but I can't see how to do this depite peering under the saddle several times feeling stupid. Can someone tell me how the seat height is adjusted or whether this is perhaps not applicable to my model? If height can't be adjusted what is the most recommended aftermarket option?

Second question is regarding the clock. I can't figure out how to adjust the time. Can change the hours no problem but how do you fix the minutes? I don't really need a clock but it annoyes me that it's almost 10 mins fast.

Thanks for any help on this,

Iain

Seat height .. the bar on the underside of the seat has two positions

Maybe best to buy an aftermarket seat from Touratech. I have an extra low version from their Kahedo line for sale Like this but without the fancy silver trim

I am similar height to you and the seat makes a BIG DIFFERENCE and it is really good.

Clock .. press the black button on the side of the display cluster. feel around its there.

On many of the overseas models there is no adjustment, one size only. Mine is the same as Iain's. I'm 5'8 and find it just ok. If you are nearly there try a pair of boots as I find that helps.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have another look under the seat but I think Deaninkl may have the answer as the bike may be built to a different spec. for this market. Odd decision not to give guys out here the height adjustment; they're definately shorter than your average Bavarian.

An aftermarket seat is probably the best solution, no point in having such a good bike and then compromising on something than can be sorted out fairly easily. I can almost get balls of both feet down but at a push and only on tarmac. Deaninkl - do you know if there would be a problem mating up an aftermarket seat such as the Kahedo with the export version bike?

Thanks again for the feedback, looking forward to being part of the GS community. My last bike was a 500cc Enfield as I lived in India for 2 years and that's the biggest bike available. Needless to say the GS has put a very big grin on my face.

sorry Iain, I don't know about any specific seats as they are not available in KL, what I do know is that there are lovered seats for the 1200 out there. Do a search here and I'm sure you will find what you need and can probably order ober the net.

I was told by my dealer in KL that the position of the non adjustable seat is the low position on the UK market adjustable seat.

One thing that does happen though is that the bike settle a little after you have used it a few thousand km therefor getting slightly lower. One mine was new I was more concious of the hieght, now I don't notice it. I can get both balls of my feet on the ground, or one full foot it I sit with the other foot still on the peg. Must say after 15 months its no longer a problem.

Using moto X boots also helps a lot as the give another inch or so.

Hope you wouk it out.

Dean

What a misleading comment?

The adjustment exist on the the 12GS on the seat itself. So yes it maybe possible that one country's import agent decided to opt for a seat without adjustment. I believe that would be the BMW low seat (as it is already on the lowest setting by default .. you can't move the bars any more)

Therefore .. OF COURSE AN AFTERMARKET WILL FIT! :rob

Especially my Kahedo one that I have for sale :D

Just read this response .. exactly what I had assumed.

So it is not that your bike in Malaysia is not adjustable. It is because they are imported with the LOW SEAT.

What Iain has to check is whether his bike has a low seat or a standard seat on it :rob

If you find the BMW low seat still not low enough then my Kahedo EXTRA LOW seat would be the only option left :D
