Anyone know what the differences is between the R1150GS and R1150GS Adventure drive shaft is?

I know that they are differnet part numbers from BMW.

I don't know what the differences are - but I can tell you that there was no way to remove my Adv's driveshaft without taking off the swinging arm.

Although driveshaft swaps from the rear (ooh-err)are apparently possible on a standard GS, it's not so on an Adv. Even with the swing arm off, it was not possible to feed the driveshaft through the housing from the rear.

This could be a case of differing manufacturing tolerances in the construction of the housings (the interior of the housing is quite roughly cast), or the UJ being a larger size...

Mike:)

Thanks,

I tried to raise my standard GS to the Adventure with Adventure shocks (wanted more clearance for off roading). Now the drive angle is enough that the drive shaft rubs inside the swing arm. Nasty noise and vibrations when set to proper sag. I've tried to increase the sag as much as I can by reducing the preload, still no go.

I was thinking of swaping out the drive shafts. But now, I think I get a set of shocks for the standard GS and sell my Adventure shocks.

No No No
Even if you get it to 'run' on a flat tar road without hitting - when you do go over a bump the shaft will hit the swing arm .. hit hard enough and/or often enough something will go wrong ...

Frank,

Are you saying that you shouldn't retro fit a rear GSA shock to a regular 1150GS?

Bugger! Does this mean I've got to go and take my ADV shocks off my GS??:)

Did you have any weird drive shaft vibrations afterwards? Especially when you pull in the clutch and coast?

I'm saying - if you change the limits of suspension travel you must make certain that the thing will still function over the entire range of the new suspension travel.

Guzzler reports some problem at one extent of travel and though it would be ok to set the normal ride height away from that area... problem is the bike won't stay that way when you ride over bumps.. and I’m warning him that the problem remains to bit his ass if he does not fix the problem, hiding it does not count.

Hi Frank, I notice Guzzler reports noise even when pre-load backed off. If we assume that with the pre-load backed off and the rider on-board would achieve the same ride height (and therefore same drive train angle) as standard GS shocks. I would suspect the problem is elsewhere.. Does that make sense?:)

I made some phone calls. Looks like I might have to pull out the drive shaft and inspect it. Something ain't right / aligned properly.

Many have changed the standard GS shocks out for Adventure shocks without an issue.

I remembered that I had the transmission cover replace (warrenty/fuel stains). The tech may not have put things back in properly (what else is new). They may have gotten by with just enough clearence for the standard shocks, but not for the adventure.

So, looks like I will busy for a day pulling things apart.

Oh, with the preload undone, and my lack of weight (I'm a skinny bugger), I can't get the angle anywhere near what the standard shock sits at.

Skinny? SKINNY ? What on earth are you doing riding a GS? Everyone knows there's a minimum weight requirement here!
Well at least that's what I tell my wife when she keeps threatening to put me on a diet...:D
