Just taken the FD off my 2000 R1150GS as the bearing is fecked and an about to fit my spare FD. Now I'm pretty sure I understand what phasing is: getting the UJs in alignment, but HOW do you actually do it? Mine is an earlier model that doesn't have a 'key' spline. Is it just a case of shining a torch up the swing arm cavity?
Just tried the torch method and I think I can make out the orientation of the gearbox end UJ so am going to try to align it that way then put some paint dots on for future reference.
Any help, hints, comments would be most welcome.

In short it's a right faff. There's quite a few threads on this so worth a search. Top tip from my experience is to use a rag stuffed into the swingarm to support the shaft whilst you're lining up the splines. Once aligned, remove rag.

Oh and don't forget to prefit the rubber gaitor to the final drive before lining up. I've been caught out by this before:rolleyes:

Good luck:thumb

Paint spline

Another tip is to shine a torch up swing arm and identify the spine you want to be at 12 o'clock position and mark the end of it with a dab of paint or similar( I use Tippex:rob)
Then put a line of paint or Tippex on the top of the spline on the bevel box side that you want at 12 o'clock on that end to give you the correct phasing.
If you combine this with the rag tip it's not too bad.
