Drive Shaft Problem

I have just scanned the forum for similar problems and solutions but could not find any. So, I am sure you folks can give me some advice.
About a week ago the drive shaft of my R1100GS - 1996, 140,000 km - broke at the front u-joint. I am traveling in Australia and parts are very expensive here. My friend bought a 9,000 km drive shaft through the internet and told me he just received the front end of the shaft.
Now, how can you take the drive shaft apart and get it together again? Does this repair make sense - a new front end and an old back end? Splines look OK.
