Several layers of clingfilm with some insulting tape around the ends???
Should be flexible enough but protect the joint from water and stuff getting in.

I agree with this sentiment, but it looks a bit broke to my untrained eye, the boots there to keep crap out and with a hole in it I presume it's letting crap and water in.

Just an Idea
The thing is... whats inside already, it might be worth snipping the zip tie off to make sure there is not anything already in there like small stones etc. before you temporary seal it.

If your not planning on riding through rivers where the shaft is under the water don't worry,use some sealant until you get back.But if I was you I would definetly try and get it apart and inspect the shaft/bevel input pinion for just grease and for peace of mind oh and you can fit a new rubber while your there,might be the best two hours you spent on the bike.Dry joints =££££££££££££.Andy

with a pair of your finest snippers, snip a tiny hole in the bottom, so if anything gets in, it'll come straight out again, i.e. water.

Sealant sounds like the easiest quick fix - remember to degrease the area. Cycle repair kit also good suggestion.

If a hole in the sump didn't stop Simon continuing the off road ride to Whitby (and back) I'd say you should be safe for the w/e
Cling film, or strip of carrier bag and cable ties sounds fine - sealant not so good, will come loose, will come off - may be internally.
Any harm that would be done.....already will have been..........and it's unlikely.
It's an easy job to change the gaiter...............if you ignore the other bits necessary to get to it
