I've owned a late '07 GS for about 6 months, and it's now done about 2500 miles. I was (unusually) riding along without earplugs today, and noticed that the final drive isn't exactly silent. For example, riding along at 20mph, pull the clutch in, and there's quite a distinct mechanical noise coming from the shaft/final drive. It's hard to describe what it sounds like - it's not particularly rumbly or rough sounding, just a loud "sussuration" noise of gears meshing, bearings turning etc. I do think it's a bit louder than my previous 1150.

Is this typical ? If others are silent, I guess I should get the dealer to have a listen.

Get it to the dealer ASAP becuase you are close to end of warranty - could be nothing or it could be the rear end needs replacing. Not expereinced it myself, but was talking to 2 people at the weekend who have had replacements recently becuase of noisy rear ends.

hi
I'm having the exact simptome on my gs 06' 15k miles i wonder what was .if anything, wrong with yours .
i'm long out of warranty now..

I've owned a late '07 GS for about 6 months, and it's now done about 2500 miles..

Given the mileage maybe the drive shaft oil has dried up :D

With only 2500 on the clock the poor thing is barely past its first service and not reaslly run in.

rear drive recondition???

i need help ...
i own a 1200 '06 plate..
i have a mild humming noise coming from the shaft area..
i took the wheel off opened parts and by reading on some posts here, i can see that the spline on the rear drive that connects into the shaft has got too much play , more then 2mm all around .. i believe that;s what causes the whoosh/hamming noise.
I've also checked the oil and replaced and it was pitch black and the play on the wheel which is very small if any .. ..
I've done the dumpiest thing to put the bike on center stand and get it trough the gears too diagnose the problem .. ..i heard the shaft crying ..

I've read the forum :) twice and i can see there are some topics about the shafts mostly on previous models..
i wonder .. is there anyone that can recondition/replace the bearings and seals on this kind of rear end shaft..
i have not called BMW yet.. i will do it tomorrow.. the bike is out of warranty..
thanx
