Driveshaft question

Thread revival!

So it appears the Drive Shaft is indeed replaced at 60k kilometers. or 36000 miles (apparently)

My bike is nearing 36k.

Appears the shaft is BMW Part 33735A670C3 - just under £100 + VAT (so £120 ish to buy)

I'm looking for first-hand experience of those who have had this done by a BMW main dealer? I have heard a rumour that altho the shaft is replaced FOC, the dealers try to sting you with a small charge for the circlips and greases (and anything else they can think of!) etc etc etc? You may not notice extra charges if your bike is in for it's "B" service at 36k...

But...if you have your bike serviced elsewhere (as I do, by a top Indie), or do it yourself, and then take the bike to a BMW main stealer for the replacement of the SHAFT ONLY - how do the dealers respond???

Anyone have any experiences?
That's the 1250 shaft, 1300 shaft is longer and redesigned and it will set you back over $1600CAD.
Another option is to remove the shaft, a fairly simple procedure, and inspect splines and u-joint for needle bearing wear. if it's good it goes back in and you're back in business

Well they could never rightly sting us on the valve clearances on a boxer like every other v-twin manufacturer does, so I guess they had to stitch us up some other way eventually. Surprised it's took them this long TBH.

Yes, all LC (pre 1300) are affected and I believe the shaft is the same on all pre-1300 LC
But I'm still interested in knowing if/how main dealers will help even without full Motorrad service history....

My 1200 shaft was replaced , FOC, ( Dick Lovetts Bristol) earlier this year. I was advised that my rear bellows/ or whatever it’s called , was perished and they sent me a picture . It’s a very cheap part so of no consequences and reasonable after 11 years . Other than that, nothing adverse to report .

According to BMW a new shaft for the 1300gs is £792 .

I saw my first 1300 GS Adv yesterday in the Dales
WTF a pig ugly bike - even worse in the flesh than the media pics
The 13 GS next to it, was a lot better proposition
The bloated 13 GSA is a caricature of former GSA bikes
Total wank
It’s a good job we all don’t like the same things isn’t it? The world would be a boring place if we all rode around on a CB500!

for K50 or K51 bikes before 2024 - whether you get a new shaft or not is fully documented in the TIPS doc. The gist is not a free shaft for all - What is offered is a check (of the driveshaft) and re-grease of the shaft splines, which is covered by warranty to all customers that own a K5x motorcycle model year 2023 and older and its unlimited by mileage or general service behaviour by the customer. If this shows its worn out you get a free shaft (as they never had any previous maint requirement for the shaft re servicing of the bike) - if it seems OK you just get to move to the new service schedule

Post 2024 the manual and the servicing was updated - pop off the splines and check every 12k miles, replace at 36 k at owners expense

Botus , my shaft was checked at a previous service and not found to be faulty .
I was recalled for shaft replacement and the bike detained for several days , awaiting parts.
I have no invoice to verify that anything was replaced .

interesting - maybe they weren't too clear on BMs instructions at the time - so told you it was OK, and then double checked ? and between the dealer and BM they bottled it and you got a freebie - what miles - do you use hard off road?

Each major Market I believe can interpret BMW AG recco, and implement their version of a good idea / and factor any local legal fun and games - oddly you can just about find out USA info - and they tend to be more forthcoming about fixing stuff because of the litigation situation over there... But now and then UK mkt seem to offer a more robust solution. Recently I found out K1200 gearboxes where only bodged up out there - but I believe UK mkt all got a free K1300 gearbox? Or was that just long term reviews in newspapers and magazines "that reported it the nice way" ! But then Fuel strips USA get a freebie and 12 years warranty - whereas UK get nothing.... and the third K1600 gearbox recall has been swept under the carpet in the UK, allegedly "as they did it right the first time..." but I'd suggest that's inaccurate, mine felt and sounded horrific and only had 10k miles with full service history !

(I’ve had many parts replaced on my ‘Trigger’s Broom ‘ bike ( Water pump, Front brake master cylinder because the reservoir seal leaking , throttle body , ECU , ABS unit ) , all covered by extended warranty . Now Cardan shaft .
In none of these cases , was I offered invoices or any paper receipt , as if trying to hide costs involved. In fact , on one occasion an invoice was refused , when I asked . )
