I am just starting to amass the bits necessary for my next build.
Having Just bought a R100GS Final drive only , i have been looking at the options regarding
the driveshaft .

I have a Drive shaft that i replaced with a New item , { Financially a Different time }
which i reckon could be repaired , there is only small/light grazing on the actual shaft , the bulk of the wear/play
seems to be coming from the worn/broken Union Joint . This i know is replaceable .
I have used a company from leeds for several repairs on Commercial drive shafts ,, Dunning and fairbank ,
the guy there reckons he will be able to effect a Reliable repair on the Shaft ..

Whats the general consensus on this repair .

very impressed

The Longest part of the Job was waiting on the OE Union Joint.
The UJ has been Nicely Crimped back into place , a lovely neat Job .

As you say, a very neat job. I wonder if they'd fit a grease nipple in the middle of the U/J to make lubrication better?

FWIW.
Some years ago I had the driveshaft from my PD refurbished by an outfit in Coventry, complete with grease nipples.
Looked great.
Failed in less than 500 mls.:eek

I suppose time will tell.
But the Gy doing the Work said it was as good as New , He used OE BMW parts , so cant see why it would fail .
Any way , It was for the Bin , I reckon £70 is a fair Gamble , the odds being stacked in my favour.

Sorry Phil this is a good one I wonder how or where he got that from they are not listed separately ??

Mind you there's no reason a good quality UJ of the correct size shouldn't do and last a long time

In my case it wasn't the UJ that failed ,It was the"Crimping"

Plus the joints will eventually o out of phase due to drive damper deterioration.

Mine was vibrating quite bad before I replace it.

Yup S'easy Just try it and see and if it vibrates lots after a while, Then check it ???

Too many nay sayers these days ! :-D

generally there are two types of u/j for any given size, one that is assembled with circlips, and one that is an interference fit and is then staked to prevent movement,if the u/j failed due to the bearing cups moving, it was probably the wrong type fitted in the first place.

you can specify a centre lube u/j when ordering the replacement, however there is not enough clearance between the yokes on the earlier shafts so the grease nipple would have to be removed and blanked off prior to use,the shaft would also probably need to be removed to gain access to regrease.
with this in mind i normally only fit centre lube kits to the lower u/j on a 1200.

I had mine done in 2006. Cir-clip retainers welded on because its better than peening.
Grease nipple in gearbox end and a blanking plug in FD end.

thats one way of doing it i suppose:thumb

Sounds like you don't like the execution or the "look" ;)
It does work and it allows slightly bigger bearings/rollers to be used... I'm am/was told:)

Cant get the sizes of the chap that did them because dead now.
He used to make these as well for them that wanted serious off-roading:

i am all for "belt n braces engineering":D:thumby:

Me too, but it was just as much for practicality :thumb2
If the UJ failed on the way to India, we had a spare and with cir-clips, it would have made replacement simpler.
Needn't have bothered with the spare. Still going.
