Wanted Ducati Monster Wanted

Esteemed members of the forum

Your assistance is required in my search for a bike as I have been away from biking for a couple of years, due to work and home life commitments.

Having recently lost my younger brother who introduced me to biking (will post a separate thread on this) in honour of his memory i have decided to get back on two wheels this year.

What am I after?

Having never owned a Monster, I quite fancy one, partly due to the riding position which is suited to London riding.

Will consider other bikes, maybe an early Multi, anything with a V twin.

budget is between £3500-£4000

Thanks in advance, what you got gathering dust in your garages guys?

If you go for an early Multi I'd suggest you look at the 1100cc model. The 1000cc before it had the Ducati clutch rattle and a narrower seat.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Monster was the same, ie, changing from 1000 to 1100. In any case the bigger engine is a good one and the last of the air-cooled bikes.
Great bikes, but lots of tatty ones around due to age and poor maintenance.

What a beaut, unfortunately my budget won’t stretch to a 1100 and can’t justify spending too much on something that I will use a couple of times a month

You'd be surprised how much the 1100's are going for if you opt for a Multi.

You'd be surprised how much the 1100's are going for if you opt for a Multi.

Agree I have a 1000 Multi and its worth feck all (about £1k) also agree the 1100s are a better bike, stronger motor wet clutch (no more infernal clack clack clack) not sure on the seat but mine on the 1000 is just a bit harder than mahogany

I love my 1000 though there is something visceral about it when you punt it down a mountain road

I meant I can’t stretch to a 1100 Monster, didn’t think about the 1000 or 1100 Multi. I’ve owned a couple of 1200 multi’s.

Keep the advice coming guys. Great source of information/advice as usual.

I recently purchased an S2R800 after doing lots of Monster research. The model seems to be almost universally approved of. Mine was within your budget from a dealer and with only 8K miles in lovely condition. Check out the link.

That looks lovely. I had an early 750 dark but never gelled with it. Carb version and cut out on a winters night on the motorway, and never got on with the useless turning circle. Loved the look of the bike and it always attracted attention wherever I parked it.
Still fancy another one.

IIRC the 04 models had issues with poor hardening on the rockers. I’d be looking for an 1100s (Ohlins as standard).
On the other hand, if you want a good looking bike I have a 1200 Multi that I want to sell. Unused since 2020, sat in the garage in a vac bag. I take it out every Spring, fiddle about with it - and then put it away again as other stuff and other bikes get in the way of me putting it back on the road. It had a belt service at Cornerspeed shortly before unintended hibernation ( initially caused by knackered knee and then COVID) Will clearly need a service & refresh. A few minor blemishes consistent with mileage (29k I think?) and the fork sliders have a tiny bit of rust just above the calliper mounts. On the flip side it’s a Pikes Peak model, complete with a few extras inc. Givi panniers. Pretty sure we could do a deal if it’s of interest.

True story - After a Saturday night on the piss I returned home and started perusing ebay ....A week later my 800 S2r was delivered. Mine was the really coooooool one with white wheels. At first I was a bit worried about reliability but it ran perfectly over many many miles. A great bike -

I bought my dream bike from when I was a student in London, a Ducati 851, they were £13k in 1990. When FZR’s were about £7k.
Even when I had a few quid I was worried about buying one and reliability issues.

I pulled the trigger and bought one for £3200 in 2001 with 30,000 miles on it, but it had been restored by the previous owner.

Used it as commuter into London every day for 4 years, trip to Corsica, all over the UK, track days, didn’t miss a beat, missed service intervals. Sold it it with 72,000 miles.

Regret selling that bike. Not worth big money but we went through a lot together.

I think most bikes are better for heavy usage. When I bought my 1200 GS in 2006 this organ was full of posts about this and that failing, mostly experienced but sunny Sunday riders. Mine was a workhorse and just got thrashed in and out of London every day. Bits of it rotted, engine cases etc, but it was 100% reliable and still is. Personally I think it looks better for all its wear (patina).

Hi Folks These days I dont really have much time to ride my bike, so I am thinking of selling. However... I have no idea what kind of money I should expect for it it's a 2011 Changes: Woodcraft clip ons and top yoke rearsets (can't remember make) custom 2 in to 1 titanium exhaust brembo...
