Before I do anything I may regret, I'm going to ask some questions from the wise.

Until today I had a BMW Nav II. Owing to a warranty issue, I now have a Nav II Plus :) .

I bought a 2Gb CF card for my Nav II and had the V7 upgrade from Garmin.

Ocean (Plymouth), gave me the full box and said, "Bring your old unit back, as long as the total contents are the same as in the new box, swap whatever you like,"

What I intend to do is remove all the old Garmin software from my PC and then load the new.

Questions;

Will I be entitled to a V8 upgrade if I do this (presumably when I register and unlock the new unit, it will just appear as a recent acquisition)?

If I do so, will I have to unload all the pre-loaded maps from the CF Card when I get the V8?

Are the V8 upgrades enough to bother with (I do use the full European mapping a lot)?

Is it worth swapping the cradle (I have no problems with the old one but it's a few seconds to do)?

(Stand-by for more dumb questions as they occur to me!)

To save disk space I suggest that you do a complete deinstallation of all Garmin products from your computer.

Order a V8 upgrade DVD from Garmin Support. It's free.

You have a new unit and you should do a new installation on your PC from scratch.

Start with installing the V7 CD's that comes with the new unit. Download the most recent MapSource from Garmin and install it. Install the V8 DVD.

Use your new Cupon Code and obtain the unlock codes for V7 and V8 from Garmin and install them. Both codes are required or else V8 will not work.

Upload the V8 map to the CF card. This will automatically delete all old maps on the CF-card.

Thanks for that.

I think I have to email Garmin to get the V8 sent to me.

Done everything as you suggest, uninstalled all the old stuff, installed the new but it won't find the unit when I attempt to transfer data (at least the CF Card is pre-loaded with all the Europe Maps).

The unlock seemed easier than the older unit, I just entered the coupon code and it found the unlock code all by itself!

I'm buggered if I can work out why it won't find the unit though.

Sorted.

The driver didn't load at first but it has now.
