Hi all, for my birthday weekend in July, the OH and myself are staying in a B&B near Auchencairn nr Dumfries, travelling up from wearside on the Friday and returning on the Sunday. I'm looking for suggestions of places to visit in the area and interesting roads for the Saturday as I have the route up and back sorted . This is the first time away on the bike for her so can't be too much of a mile cruncher and ideally include a few nice stop offs for tea and cakes as well as lunch ;) New Galloway, Galloway forest park, A702 ???

Thanks in advance, Mark

Mark,

Galloway Forest Park is beautiful. I have a route that takes in a couple of forest trails. If you're interested pm me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Routes

Around loch ken then go clatteringshaws over to Newton Stewart.......Dumfries to thornhill drop into drumlangrigg castle for a nosey... Moffat as well is worth a run Moffat/Edinburgh road A701 it's called the beef tub......

Was up in Dumfries & Galloway a couple of summers back.... wish I hadn't bothered. Much of Scotland has it's merits but D&G is a forgotten backwater lacking just about everything except stupid high prices for food, fuel, accommodation and beer I wouldn't be able to recommend it to anyone when there is so much more that is so much better not far away.

This place www.galliecraig.co.uk/‎ is also worth a visit and is very good :thumb2

Don't think we will be heading that far west but cheers anyway.

Cheers George, just been looking at Loch Ken, using the A713 or A762 or both ;) Also, will be going through Moffatt on the way home taking in Tulla and Megget and St Mary's Loch, love that area .

A713 then on A712 is a great run.... I live Dalbeattie if your needing more info....A711 from Dumfries around the coast dropping into rockcliff then kippford is a good wee run to....

I'm doing the A710 from Dumfries to your place then the A711 round to Auchencairn to get to the B&B. Is the A713 worth going all the way to Ayr? Looks like some great scenery on google maps :)

Yea great run you can come back down via cairnryan drop into portpatrick for your bar lunch....

Anywhere is good on a bike in my eyes :) Done a 4 day scoot around all of Scotland a couple of years ago on a sportsbike, Braemar, Fort Augustus, Kyle of Lochalsh, Ullapool, Thurso then back to Fort Augustus so get what your saying and fully intend to revisit it all on the GSA, Just not next month :bounce1

I always try to fit in the A712 from Newtonstewart to Crocketford when I come of the ferry for a bit of a blast, last year the surface was a bit interesting in places though..... There's the Raiders Road if you fancy a bit of off road on the way which brings you out on the A762 at Loch Ken. :thumb

The A702 from Carronbridge to Elvanfoot (Dalveen Pass) is one of my favourites down that way. Mostely uphill travelling in the north-east direction.

As mentioned - Moffat is a nice town for a stop, with free, easy parking and a few good eateries.

D&G makes for a wonderful trip - once off the A75

The Isle of Whithorn & Mull of Galloway are worth a visit if you have time as is much of the coastline (Sandyhills/ Kirkudbright) and Portpatrick.

The 712 Crocketford/ New Galloway/ Newton Steward is good for views & spirited ride :D
Do visit Glentrool & the forest drive past Loch Doon is a must.

Enjoy, oh & take the midgy spray!

Phil

Local resident or never actually been there?

Another vote for A712 Crocketford to Newton Stewart, take a a wee detour along the Raiders Road (good camping at Otter? parking bit) etc.

Oh if you are coming up the M6 turn off at Carlisle and take the
A7 towards Edinburgh up to Langholm then take either the B7068
towards Lockerbie or the B709 towards Eskdalemuir drop in at
Samye Ling centre for a coffee, then follow the B709 along the east
side of St Mary's loch, then turn left on to the A708 towards
Moffat via Grey Mare's tail etc.

Both routes are an introduction to some of the roads the south
west has to offer. And more interesting than the slog along the
A75.

Have a fun trip.

Aww did diddums wake up from their afternoon nap in a cranky mood, because
someone on the internet had disagreed with them, bless, not to worry I'm sure
mummy will be along soon with milk & cookies and make it all better, & you'll
never have to think of or speak to that nasty man again.
