Some great replies there,I will try to fit in as many of your suggestions as possible. We are travelling over from north tyneside so going to head Rothbury over to kielder, to Newcastleton, Langholm, Lockerbie etc, spend the second day doing as much as possible what has been mentioned then travelling back on the Sunday via Moffat, photo op at Talla reservoir and St. Mary's loch, Selkirk, Kelso over to Seahouses for an ice cream before back to Blyth to pick up the kids.

Forgot to mention - the Glen Cafe at St Mary's Loch is a shadow of it's former standard. Changed lease a while back and even removed the outside tables.

Not worth a stop any more - in my opinion.

Sounds like you'll have a great trip just getting there ;)

Aye cracking roads I've been on before but never with the OH. She sometimes wonders why I enjoy going out on the bike so much, nows her chance to see why ;)

Any done the B road from Straiton to Bargrennan?

Was up in Dumfries & Galloway a couple of summers back.... wish I hadn't bothered. Much of Scotland has it's merits but D&G is a forgotten backwater lacking just about everything except stupid high prices for food, fuel, accommodation and beer I wouldn't be able to recommend it to anyone when there is so much more that is so much better not far away.

Obviously never went off the Dumfries-Stranraer road then......

Obviously he never did, as I have just done over 600 miles on some cracking roads. Brief recap, Blyth to kielder, Newcastleton, Langholm, Eskdalemuir, Lockerbie, Dumfries and then the coast road along to Auchencairn.

Day 2 Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse, Newton Stewart, A714 as far as Glentrool then carried on north along the forest B road up to a lovely village called Straiton, East to Dalmellington then over to Loch Doon, back on to A713 down to New Galloway which is a lovely sweeping road. A712 back to Newtown Stewart and onto A75 for just a few miles to Creetown and the quiet B road that arcs round to Gatehouse, the B796.

Returning home through Castle Douglas on the A713 to Carsphairn along the B729 to Moniaive then A702 to Thornhill and along to Elvanfoot which has some fantastic scenery. Quick top up in Moffat, past Beef Tubs on the A701,turning off at Talla reservoir and along to St Marys Loch, A711 to Hawick, Carter bar, Scots gap and back to Blyth.

Hope this helps anyone else thinking of venturing that way soon. All good roads and varied mix of sweeping A-roads and the nadgery, twisty, up, down type. Thanks all for the suggestions.
Mark
