Dunlop TR91 Tyre Review

Thanks, I've sports and sports tourers before I was converted to GS's and yes I'd have been very lucky to get 6000 miles from a tyre, the GS has impressed me in all departments, no going back other than blasts on my LC :) .

i should have noted what the mileage was when i put them on. i think i've done around 700 miles. tread is still good but i've noticed very slight squaring on the rear but nothing really to worry about. my only dislike is the rear feels quite hard and rumbly on motorways over 70mph. i might take a few pounds out of the rear.

don't go off road other than dusty stuff but no problems so far.

Well as I write, there are a number of tyre threads on the go - every body pretty much asking the same questions.

I've had these on for about 600 miles now and really really like them. Prior to these I had Road attacks and EXP's.

I do take the odd byway from time to time - nothing particularly technical, and I like to play on tiny single track, gravel strewn back roads, so whilst I had no qualms with the road attacks, I wanted to go back to an 80/20 road / off-road tyre.

On Sunday I was late for an appointment. (Like I completely forgot about it!!). I was in bed drinking coffe when the phone rang, and in a nut shell should have been 25 miles away, ten minutes previously. Bike out the shed and 17 minutes later I was in there, having ridden at genuine go to jail speeds on wet A roads on these TR91's. They were absolutely brilliant, they stuck like glue, the roads were a mixture of dry, damp and soaking wet, and not only did they not miss a beat, but they absolutely ooozed confidence. This is probably the looniest ride I've done on the GS since getting it a little over a year ago, and I have to say, I got off the other end grinning like a cheshire cat

I spent the day training on the bike and took gnarly gravelly b roads home. It was still sunshine and showers. I had a bit of a play on the way home, and again, I can't praise them enough. Their profile is very neutral, I love the way they handle and they grip like the proverbial. (Here comes a wet drain cover.... I'll ride over it, gas it like feck and try and spin up the rear ...... nope, it won't do it....).

I've taken them on simple off road stuff, and they've been fine and will almost definitely stick with these until something newer comes on the market.

I have dropped the pressures in them a tad. I was runing 36 /42 when I first put them on, but have dropped that to 34/40. I guess the side walls are a bit beefed up, and the higher pressure just felt a tad too firm for my liking.

I think I paid £215 for the pair fitted, (can't quite remember now..).

Good tyre - very very pleased with them. :thumb2

I bought mine from these guys.
Great price, great advice and fast delivery.
thumbs up for TryeTec

I've been running TR91s for 3500 miles now and they're loads better than the EXPs the bike came on, especially in the wet, which is when it really counts.
The slightly stiffer sidewalls are worth accepting, assuming of course you value grip over ride comfort.

It thought the outstanding feature of EXP's was their wet weather performance so interesting you think the TR91s are even better. I've only done 4k miles on EXP's and have no complaints. Will change at about 5k and was heading towards Trail Attacks. TR91's do sound tempting though.

Having read all the reviews I'm off to get a pair of TR91's fitted today as the EXP's are shot (well the rear one is) at 5k miles. £220 fitted to the bike which sounds good to me.

2k miles and the TR91 rear is down to less than 4mm tread left in the centre. How many mm does this tyre start with? Have 2.5k miles to do next week and not convinced it will last that long hence the question.

Assuming you intend to leave 1mm at the end you still have 3mm to play with.

I doubt it came with more than 7mm and probably about 6mm, which means you are most likely getting 1k per mm, so assuming same wear rate you would get home with 1.5mm left.

Tourance EXP on my bike had about 6mm from new, Roadsmarts come with about 5.5mm - this is measured by myself with a guage and not from any manufacturer claims.

I also tend to find I get a bit more mileage when touring compared to blatting around locally.

If your unsure swap it out and keep the old one for later, I have done this before and got my local tyre store to agree to refit the original tyre FOC :thumb2

TR91

Had a set fitted at TST 2 weeks ago and then headed round France with Wapping and his wanderers and I have to say I am impressed
covered about 1500 miles or so over the weekend.
now have around 2000 on them and they still look like new. (not actually measured them tho?)

Heading to the Stella Alpina in a couple of weeks and have no intention of putting new tyres on as I expect these to easily cover the 2500+ miles i will be doing for that trip.......and more when I get back home

TST put 38psi in the front and 48 psi in the rear and it was like riding on a knife edge.
dropped them down to 33F and 41R and its all good for me.

Im sure if I had left them at 38/48 the centre would have worn alot more

may be worth checking your pressures and dropping them a touch if they are hi

take care

Andy

Thank Rasher. That's a good plan so I'm getting a new rear fitted this afternoon and will keep the tyre they take off. Am also going to check the tread depth on the new tyre when fitted as the fitter just went and measured the one he has in stock and said it has 8mm tread depth.

APW. I run 34f 42r and have been pleased with how the TR91 sticks to the road in both wet and dry conditions.

New TR91 fitted and it does indeed have 8mm of tread as I just checked it. That means if I ran my previous TR91 down to 2mm which is when I normally change tyres, I would only have got 3k miles max out of that tyre. Pretty pants mileage considering previous EXP I got 5k miles and in my humble opinion there's very little difference between the two tyres in terms of grip in the wet/dry and general handling. Irrespective of miles, they're both really good tyres though :)

Glad I took your advice Rasher otherwise I'd have come home with -1mm of tread on my tyre at the end of next week and I guess that's not good.

Well after nearly 2,000 posts one of them has been useful :D

Wear rate sounds scary on 91's, I got about 5k from a Tourance EXP on the GS, too early to tell how long the one on the Tenere will last, but guess similar amount is likely.

May have to stick to Roadsmarts as I really don't want to drop below 5k to a rear tyre, I find it acceptable on 150+ BHP sportsbikes, but not on our mules.

Don't forget that the delivery of power will play a part in your tyre wear. Whilst the in-line 4 super bikes make oodles more power than a GS on paper, the reality on the road is that in line 4's have a smooth delivery and the big twins (if you use all that mid range grunt properly..) will give a tyre a harder time. :thumb2

Have done 2.3k miles on the TR91's rear tyre since fitting ten days ago (touring the Highlands of Scotland) and centre of tread is already below 4mm so this will be another 3-3.5k mile rear tyre before needing a change. In my book that's a short life but in it's defence, the TR91 has not stepped out once even given the monsoon rain the Highlands dumped on us. For grip on tarmac, this tyre is really outstanding and confidence inspiring come rain or sun.

Have gone through five TR91's on the rear now and the average miles per tyre before needing replacement is 3,016 miles. Brilliant all weather Tarmac tyre though.

3100 miles on my tr91's including 1500 miles on Autobahns at speed two up and heavily loaded and the rear is not even half worn, front looks like new.
Original exp rear was down to 2mm after 3000 miles and the front was well worn
