DVD disc copy to PC

Hi,
I want to copy a DVD which was bought by a mate onto my Computer. I do not wish to make illegal copies just record off my mate for further reading.

When i put it into my DVD drive press 'My Computer' go to 'DVD DRIVE' scroll down and press copy nothing happens?
And yet on my mates he can record it straight onto his?

Is there another way?

I dont think it's illegal for the owner of the dvd to make a backup copy of a disk he owns for his personal use. Maybe your mate could make a 'backup' of his dvd and watch it with you...

It is.

It's even been ruled that it's illegal to copy your own music cd's.

As for as I know there has yet to be a single instance of anyone copying for private use (e.g. back-up or change of playback medium CD>MP3 etc) being persued under the Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2000, which modifies the pre-existing legislation under which it was legal to do this.

"Commercial" copiers have been persued, but legally, twas ever thus.

AFAIK you only buy the licence that entitles you to play the dvd or cd. you're not buying a licence to do as you like with the content.

you are definitely not entitled to make "backup" copies in the UK. i believe it might be allowed in other parts of the world with different laws (USA?).

Computer games users enjoy a special privilege under the existing copyright law. According to Section 50(A) of the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, legal purchasers of computer games are explicitly permitted to make a backup copy of their purchase. (Interestingly, the rule specifically applies to computer games. For no adequately-explained reason, purchasers of music CDs or DVD movies are not granted the same rights to protect their investment.

Encrypted yes...however this means nothing....where theres a will theres a way.

It is sooooo easy to copy (er i mean backup) anything these days. But your right even to back up your own discs is now illegal
