When I record a dvd on a Sony USB dvdrw with Nero 7 and dvd-r, it plays fine on the laptop but when I stick it in the home player it's all jittery and skips a lot.

What am I doing wrong?
Would another sort of dvd blank help?

Some dvd players don't like copied discs :eek

Extremely rare these days though. Try burning at a maximum of x2 or x4 speed - I used to have the same trouble, but burning at lower speeds made the difference.

The 8x refers to the maximum write speed but the device that is writing has to be capable of acheiving this speed, and the media is important, my Pioneer will write at 16X but only with certain brands of disc, Verbatim ( mitsubishi ) are the best most others write at 12x.
The 8x ones will write at 8x if they are Verbatim with most others at 6x and some at 4x.

If you can check out the firmware revision of the writer you may find an update that will increase the speed and compatibility.

It's the porn filter on the home dvd unit scrambling your copies ;)
