Early servicing intervals

On a low mileage bike its normal to have just an annual service.

OK, you buy the bike in Jan and because of winter only have the first service in May.

So, does the annual service then run til the following January or May?

12 months from the time you had it serviced or when the next 6k service is due

If you look at the actual service sheets on the attached PDF you'll see that the annual service is generally just a duplication of items in the normal service.

Anyone doing more than 12k a year shouldn't really need it.

Annual service is fine - with one caveat - operating temperature and Oil specification.

I don't habitually ride at low temperatures on the BMW - but I do on the Honda XR. I change the oil viscosity accordingly (which happens to sort of coincide with the mileage service requirement)
10W40 in winter (-10 degrees to 30 degrees) , 20W50 (0 degrees upwards)in summer (These are approx operating temperatures in centigrade - I can't remember them exactly.)
On the XR - it's incredibly hard to start at low temperatures when running 20w50 oil - the electric starter doesn't manage it, and the bike always feels like it's running through treacle.

It's worth making sure that the oil you have will be compatible with the temperature range - which is probably why a lot of dealers are going for the 10w50 synthetic oils - as they cover -20 degrees upward on the R1200's

If the dealer is any good they should just do the service which is due. So if you've not done the required mileage (eg 6k) then they should just do the Annual service. If you've done 6,12,18k etc then you should get a service based on mileage.

btw, my Audi only gets serviced every 2 years or 18k. When are BMW going to achieve this on their bikes. Or are they worried that too many bits will fail / drop off if they don't get them in regularly. Or could it just be a nice money spinner
