I know I'm heavy handed but I was told my 2002 1150GS Adventure would do between 40 and 60mpg (by the salesman).
I get 36 going to work and back and best, on a run round Wales fully loaded, was 42mpg. My work route is 13 miles of big fast sweeping stuff usually doing the national speed limit.
Should I be looking into something like inlet balance, as it was fully serviced when I bought it 1400 miles ago, or as I have only ever got 38-40 from VFR, Blade, XTZ, Harris and SV should I just think this is the cost of my heavy handed need for enjoyment.
Also I've just fitted Bosch Compact 100 lamps (£40 inc wiring kit) to the crash bars as I was fed up of everyone pulling out on me, they work a treat for half the price of Wunderlich and have an ABS rugged shell.
YOU CAN SEE ME NOW, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE WHITE VAN MAN, 20YDS NOTICE AND NO-ONE BEHIND ME and all you others.
Plus fitted a Remus system and Y-piece, fantastic, big change in power, and behaviour, although I thought this would have improved my economy but it didn't, maybe because it sounds so good I've got even more heavy handed.
Thanks for the rant.

Fuel economy

I've got an 1150 adventure (with the bigger tank) adn i've read reports of people getting 300 odd miles from a tankfull averaging 270 etc. Most i've had from a tank is 240 and i thought i was taking it easy. I reckon the fuel economy on the 1150 adv is highly dependant on how you ride it.:augie

Hello Mark, Just going to nudge your thread over to the 1150 section in the forum for you.

:)

GS`s aren`t noted for their economy. Lets face it, they have all the aerodynamics of a brick. I had an 1150 ADV and reckoned on about 40mpg which was good enough. My 1200 averages about 42 but I have had 55 and as low as 31:augie

I wouldn`t worry and if you are worried about fuel consumption, you may need an Enfield!

Sit back, wind the throttle and enjoy the ride!!:thumb2

I've emptied an Adv tank in as little as 165 miles, but that was 165 very quick miles around the IOM. I make that 25mpg!!!:confused: I usually average 45mpg or 9-10 miles/litre as a rule of thumb, but I've got a powercommander fitted & this allows me to set a fuelling map to suit what I'm wanting to do... Going touring...? Use a leaner map. Going to the TT...? Chuck more go-juice in & enjoy the performance. All in minutes, via a laptop download. Best freebie I've ever had :thumb

A Y piece improved my MPG from under 40 to 45+.
When was it last serviced.Plugs, air filter, valve clearances,TB synch and TPS check.
Do you run with panniers?.
As mentioned,they have Brickdynamics.Kills economy over 80MPH.

Thanks all

Thanks for all the advice, getting used to BMW technology takes some working out, especially when there isn't much.
Just glad I'm getting about my usual economy and saves me checking the carb balance this weekend.

I've never run the bike dry, so I can't give you exact figures.

I would say that whilst it is supposed to be a 300mile tank, the only times I think I would come close to that is when touring. 2up with panniers on slow roads (50mph).

I'f I'm on fast roads / motorway, the speed increases and the fuel consumption goes down (even when running at constant speed). So I guess the Adventure aerodynamics / airflow turns slick air into treacle at higher speeds.

I would have thought that riding solo around my local country roads without luggage would have been better than 2up, but I guess that I just must use the throttle more when solo.

cat code 'plug'

I have an 1100gs and get an acceptable 50 -60mpg fully loaded, with the cat plug in the correct position but if I take it out of line it does run a good bit richer and will go through a tank in about 160 miles, it does get rid of all signs of surging tho. I wonder if yours has been taken out or turned around to get rid of the surging that some bikes suffer from.

8-9 miles per litre on my daily 40 mile commute of twist A and B roads. Very rarely get her into top gear though because, I am either overtaking stuff , following stuff at 50 ish which is too low for sixth or whipping round 3rd gear bends.

I went from Hstings to Lands End and back on sixty six litres of petrol. I am very happy. I think this is pretty economical. I also did a trial last year. I went 300miles from my dooorstep in London to Lake District and back and it took 50 litres. I think that's brilliant.:rob

1150 short journeys, 40-45 mpg. Long journeys 60-90 mph 50-55 mpg.

That can't be right ...

6 miles per litre!

Is that right that dumping the cat increases mpg ?
