eek! warning light came on this morning....

......on the way to work. As I don't have my handbook with me, I thought I'd check to see what you all thought:

Cruising down the M1, the red battery light started glowing and eventually came up to a fairly bright illumination. After about 20 mins, riding through town I noticed it had gone out again, and stayed off until journeys end. Now on my Land Rover, if this light came on, it usually meant the alternator was not working and the car was running off the battery (and stopped once the battery was flat), so I switched the headlight off when I saw the light glowing. Would this have had enough of an effect for the warning light to go back out after a while?

What does it mean on the GS? What needs checking?

Might be worthwhile checking the tension on the alternator drive belt. You can check the condition of the belt at the same time.

Check alternator belt,any connector blocks for tightness and the pins for corrosion,battery terminals for tightness and check the electrolyte level in the battery if its a lead-acid one.

It's the anti-Motorway warning light. They don't like being on Motorways for more than 10 minutes......
 
Had something like this on my bike last year heading over the Dolomites and after checking alternator belt, battery etc finally traced the fault to a problem with the wiring loom. What appeared to have happened was that water ingress into the loom where the warning lights from the instrument panel all join together (located between the tank and the headstock) had caused some of the connections to fail. There is a strange 3 into two into one earth wire arrangement there. The charging warning light was the first to go on the blink and several others followed it a few days/weeks afterwards.
Wiggling the harness about and looking for the fault appearing and dissapearing was how I finally tracked it down.

I had a new belt fitted in Feb this year, so I'll start with a look at that. No problems today, so will wait and see what happens. I had a pillion on yesterday, first time for yonks - probably the extra strain of lugging 2 people along....
