Today, whilst riding along, got a strong smell of burning. Didnt think too much about it, thinking it may have been something in the area. I then glance at the dash and find that i have lost allpower to the dash. No speedo, tacho, computer etc. I pull over to the side of the road and turn the ignition off and then a WHOLE LOAD of white smoke billows out from under the tank:eek:
Thinking that the whole bike is going to go up in a blaze of (in)glory, call the fire brigade. Luckily, by the time they arrive, things have calmed down somewhat and the brigade decide that they are 98% certain that it wont go up in flames, and decide not to drown it.
Now the only thing that i have changed on the bike recently is the screen ( i have rulled this out as a cause!) and added a (brand new) Tom Tom (v2). This was connected to the correct accessory socket under the beak, using the correct BMW male connector.

Sooo. Anyone else had a similar experience? Any known issues? Any ideas????

The bike is a 2011 Triple Black twin cam

BMW assist collected me within the hour, and deposited the bikes at Vines, so hopefully sometime next week, i might have some idea of what happened and it will be fixed under warranty.

Flaming hell thats bad news. Make sure Vines dont hide behind a smokescreen. Get in there tomorrow and light a fire under them. That should spark them into action.

White smoke? Coming from under the tank of a Triple Black..? You'd have thought they'd manage to colour code the smoke, at least......:augie

That's z bit worrying I've just bought one of them, keep us posted.

Was a different battery fitted? With an odyssey battery, the rerouting of the cables and different arrangement of the terminals can, without enough care in installation, have the seat adjustment bar lying pretty close.

Nope. Only Tom Tom fitted.

Yeah but it wasn't a BMW sat nav so they might not want to accept blame as they always say only use BMW apporoved accessories fitted by an official BMW dealer.

Vines have stripped the bike down and have ordered new loom and ECU. At this stage, they say that it is a warranty job but have offered no explanation as to how it occoured until further investigation. I'll keep you all informed, but they have said this is only the second time that they have seen this and the first was caused by the meatl bar on the front seat coming adrift after the rubber had persihed and the bar resting on the battery terminals, so i dont think anyone has much to worry about.

Very suspicious of that metal bar me. Have it well wrapped up in sparkies tape.

Insulating tape is a good idea, as is heat shrink tubing.

I took a leaf out of someone elses book and made a set of individual lugs from stainless steel on the lathe at work to replace the bar, thus making more space under the seat for the fitting of a 'Fuzeblock'.

Much better than having a single bar that can cause a fire, what a poor design.

Any chance of some pictures?:rob

Mine is covered in heatshrink, but I also have a 4 inch piece of flexible plastic (cut from a tupperware-type box) clamped under the battery retainer strap covering the positive terminal.
