SOOoooo .... bike was running lovely, no problems with starting etc. Came back from a ride, stopped the bike, came back to it 5 minutes later, starter tried to engage then stopped altogether. Noticed the ignition light wasn't as bright as normal, when I pushed the start button the ignition light went out and was not seen again that day :blast
I changed the starter motor for a known good one, exactly the same outcome as before. Took the tank off and checked the battery, charged it overnight, came back to the bike the next day, exactly the same as the day before, no ignition, no starter motor crank.
Fitted jump leads to the battery connectors, (battery disconnected), the headlight came on with the ignition off
Tuned the ignition on, starter motor cranked over, turned ignition off, headlight still on :nenau went to disconnect the jump leads from the bike and burned my pinkies on the clip, proper hot
As i am not great with electrics, thought i would ask on here for suggestions before tackling it.

Much appreciated :beerjug:

Check wiring loom running from the ignition switch that runs to the rear on lh side of headstock for broken wires that may be shorting inside the sheathing.

I have some really weird things happen on my oilheads with a dead battery. Strange dash warnng light behaviour. Relays clicking. Jumping the bike doesn't always work as sometimes the dead battery in the circuit doesn't play well.
Maybe try another battery or jump start the bike with no battery in the bike to see if the situation changes.
Good luck

Cheers Timolgra, I was thinking along those lines myself, or maybe ignition switch fault .. whatever it is it, it is set to keep me out of mischief for a few hours :blast

Good advice, there is a cable tie in that area where the loom flexes tightly and can cause a break.
It's not uncommon and I have an idea there is a repair loom available.

Thanks Timolgra/Wreck Diver, i hadn't heard of that problem, but it will be the first point of contact, (when I get a minute to myself) :D:D

I posted about the problem more than 10 years ago.
Cut all the cable ties that secure the wiring around the top yolk and frame.
