Hy
I had my battery gone dead, just like other users here, but after a little while after replacing it my 2004 GS Dakar started to act rather strange.
The most obvious simptom is that the revolution counter indicator goes up wihout a reason. I am cruising at 3.000 rpm and suddenly my revolution counter indicator shows that I have 5.000 or 6.000 rpm, although the engine has not changed its number of rotations. After a little while the indicator comes down to the real value. I belive this happens when th engine is quite hot.
I must say that I feel also that the running of the engine is not quite "round", to me it seems it is something not ok, it doesn't seem so smooth, but I'm not sure.
Now, is there anyone of you who incountered this problem, because I would gladly go to a shop to put it on a computer test, but I don't have acces to something like that - the first one is at 400 km away.
I have a friend that told me it could be the regulator / rectifier, also I read somewhere that it could be the revolution sensor, but I woulnd't throw my money on them, only to find out that that isn't the problem.
If you have any ideas or you encountered this problem please help me.
Thank you

check the battery connections, if you've just replaced it the connections may have worked loose. 99% of the time that's the problem.

Hi
I checked and rechecked, but the battery connections are very well tighten.
Thank you but I am afraid it is something more complicated than this, unfortunatelly.
I have serched through ”The BMW F650 Technical FAQs” but I did't find out anything, either I did't look for it properly or it isn't there.
Thank you again

Any ideas?

Today I realised that the temperature has nothing to do with it, I just left the garage and the revolution indicator jumped again.
What I noticed was that the engine has a ”hick-up” (hiccup) like feeling (like when you, for a very short moment you turn down the acceleration and very quickly you turn it back up again) and the indicator goes to 6.000 or 7.000 rpm, but the engine goes normally.

Hello
I finally found out what the problem was.
Well it was the rev sensor, actually the plug that conects this sensor to the sistem was filled with water. This sent bad data to the computer and it generated the odd behaviour of the byke and of the rev indicator.
So, if your rev indicator jumps higher than it should and the bike has a strange behaviour you should check the rev sensor plug or the rev sensor.
