As I am lacking in the Electrical knowledge department, could someone reassure me that I am not going to blow up my GS.
Question 1.
I bought a power adaptor for the GS socker yesterday and have fitted it to a 4 port lighter socket from Halfords. Cutting off the cigarette lighter adaptor and wiring it in the GS adaptor. Plugged in the GPS adaptor and all working nicely, fits under the seat just at the back of the tank nicely. (how water proof is that area?)
Question 2.
Although my pump and GPS work my car charge for the Phone does not. Any ideas why?
Question 3.
Do I need to put a fuse before using this for a prolonged period of time? And if yes HOW (Yes I am really that bad at electrics)
what circuit have you wired it into? If you've wired it into the power take off on the starter motor cover, then the circuit is fused already.
I've experienced the same problem with my phone adaptor - these 'universal' cigarette lighter plugs work in some and not others - have a look at where the connectors on the adapter are and where they are on the socket, you may have to bend out the contacts or rotate the plug in the socket..... (I'm assuming you've tried the phone plug in each of the sockets and in a car socket, so you know the problem isn't in the charger ).
I've never had any problems with water ingress under the seat.
Good to see that you obviously got back safely yesterday; when are you going to post the photos?
1. Can't help: I've got a 650 ya know
2. This is probably just due to contact position, I had the same problem with the socket on my 650 and just fiddled with the contacts on the phone adapter until the little green light finally came on. In the end it was just a matter of rotating the phone charger in the accessory socket.
3. Fusing does not protect aainst long term use but against a power draw above the rating of the circuit capability. In other word it protects the wiring circuit from permanent damage by melting before damage can occur. If the circuit that you have connected into is already fused then you should check the rating and if it is one of the major circuits - say the starter - then it is worth inserting a fuse carrier witha smaller fuse into the live connection.
Is the accessory socket a genuine BMW part. If so did it not have a fuse as part of the kit - Mine did.
I don't have a wiring diagragm for the 1150 but if you get stuck we can meet up and I will have a look for you.
Tim, Photos tomorrow on my work station (it's faster)
I have plugged it straight into the power socket on the starter motor cover. The socket came from Hugendons M40 yesterday and it is simply a socket with no wires. (£4) I think.
Basically cut off the cig lighter and wired the 4 socket points to the BMW socket.
