I've started getting some weird electrical symptoms on my bike (02 non-ABS Adv). It started when I jet washed it somewhat enthusiastically last Friday. I originally thought that I'd got water somewhere I shouldn't have and that it would sort itself out as it dried out. However, it's now nearly a week aflterwards and the intermittent symptoms persist.

When I turn on the ignition, I get the normal whine from the fuel pump and all the expected lights on the panel come on. Sometimes it'll start up normally, but it'll often refuse to. On these occasions, when I press the starter, I get an immediate 'click' followed by the lights dimming, a continual series of clicks and buzzes from the relays under the seat and the display lights will dim. At the same time, the fuel gauge display will flash on and off and the tachometer needle will wander about. These symptoms persist even after I've let go of the starter button

By a series of trials, I've found that the display returns to normal when I switch off the kill switch.

The weird thing is that I can switch everything off again, switch on again and the bike will start as if nothing was amiss - or I can get a direct repeat. Any ideas?

I'm wondering about a sticky starter solenoid or the starter gear needing cleaning up or something. The battery is nearly new (BMW Gel job - bought in Nov) and, when the bike's behaving itself, it cranks the engine at a normal speed (I left it on the charger overnight to ensure it was topped up - same symptoms this morning). All fuses are OK. Once started the bike runs fine with all lights etc working correctly.

As an aside, I've a lot of electrical gear fitted on the bike. As is often the case, the kit has been fitted piecemeal and I think I'm going to take the bodywork off next month (when I get my house & garage back) and take off the crap I don't use, whilst fitting a new extra fuse box under the seat and re-wiring all the accessories through it.

All help appreciated...

Hi Mike,

As you said "all" help appreciated I'll venture an opinion. In my experiance this is an earth problem. I'd check your battery connections first and then move on to all or any earth points. Sorry i cant eb more specific, but i'm new to these bikes and have no wiring diagrams to work through.

As I said, I'm not familiar with these bikes at all yet, but I'd venture a gues that the kill switch is bringing another earth into play and rectifying another bad earth elsewhere.

If you jet washed the handlebar switchgear areas, i'd look at any connector blocks and inside the switchgear if that got wet too.

The golden rule of retrun to the last place you worked may apply if altered to the last place you wet!
;) :)

These are just my thoughts on how I'd approach the problem. I'll leave an expericaned grown up to give you some more specific hints.

Best,

Dave.:D

...you don't know the definition of 'Electrical Weirdness' until you've owned an elderly Xantia....

Oohh, sorry you do! :D

S'funny, but I had a very similar conversation in the pub tonight. Apparently BW starter-motors are almost identical to those used on some Peugeot/Citroens and suffer from worn bushes (not brushes) which make the engine turn over very slowly and cause high-load problems with the electrics. My mate can rebuild them for a small(ish) charge and reckons the difference is astonishing. May be worth trying.

Even weirder...:(

I rode down to Eynsford yesterday evening - bike started and ran fine. Left the pub at about 10:30 for the ride back, once again the bike started without any drama.

On the way back up the M11, I briefly flashed my lights to let someone in Lane 1 out - as I did so the engine died briefly  - it was just like hitting the rev-limiter and lasted for the split second I had the high beam (flasher switch) on - as soon as I let go all was well again. I carried on, not wishing to repeat the experience. I also got a slight anomaly when indicating in either direction, the indicators would start flashing with one shorter flash before behaving normally (and cancelling normally).

Whe I got onto unlit roads, I used the dip switch to change between dip and main beam (although I thought it unwise to attempt to use the flasher) - the lights acted normally and I got home safely.

When I locked the bike up, I used the 'plipper' to arm the alarm and, although it beeped twice, as it usually does, the indicators (which usually flash in time with the 'beeps') flashed only briefly on the second beep.

Something tells me there's an intermittent dead short or bad earth somewhere.

Can anyone recommend an auto-electrician who knows their way around oilhead electrics? I'm WAAAY out of my depth here...

Well, I pick the bike up tomorrow afternoon after having a new starter motor fitted. All electrical weirdness has disappeared (I'm assured :P)...
