I had the same problem on my bike once. Have you change the switch if so it may be an incompatibility issue between the very similar g/s switch and the later 88 to 90 GS switch.

Anyway the way I fixed mine was:
Find the connector block that the handle bar switch runs to under the tank.
Put in a piggy back wire between the green wire (feed for main beam) to the yellow or white/yellow supply/feed to the dip beam.
You can test this by getting a wire and just poking it into the connector box just to try it.

Wiring diagram here for 88 to 90GS -but not sure what the resolution will be like off this site. PM me your email address if you want me to send through as a higher res file

Hi Pete
Thanks for the fix I have come to the same conclusion as you that it is the switch that is the problem I traced all live feeds ect and bridged the switch and the light came on so I will Put in a piggy back wire.
Thanks again for the response I would Like a copy of the dg I will PM you my email address.

cheers
Eddie

All the mystery electrical problems on my 350,000 km G/S were solved with a new ignition switch and circuit board for the warning lights - it appears they do just wear out .

Pity they were the last things I replaced rather than the first-----.
