Last question for a while.

In trying to get up 2 speed about my recently acquired 1981 r80gs i read that the electronic ignition on the 1980 - 83 bikes is dodgy and after that fitted with improved system. Is this a problem with these early bikes & if so should/could i upgrade?

By the way this web site is unbelievable!

Thanks. Andy:cool:

The only 'upgrade' is a coil. The old grey ones have a reputaion of cracking and letting moisture in. Having siad that my original grey coil is still going strong after 13 years. However I cary a spare coil, black box and I've duplex hall effect devices. I also carry an alternator rotor. Your requiments for reliably reaching your destination may be different from mine.

Thanks 4 the pointers frank. What are duplex hall device thingy's.
Andy:confused:

The bm standard ignition can has one hall effect device in it. I used to carry a spare can .. rather big. Then I mounted another hall effect device in it 180 degrees away from the original one. So now I have one can with two devices - eitehr of which will fire the bike, so I have a spare without any extra space. You'll have to do that your self - see my web pages for the details.

Once again Thank you. This site and the users of same are blowing me away.
Yours Andy
