Emptying a GSA fuel tank

Beemerman. Following info may be helpful. Have had two new strips fitted by dealer. On both occasions I was told that the new strip had been calibrated for empty but that I needed to fill tank ASAP to complete the calibration

That's correct, which is why my readout is still saying I have a 250 mile range. This should all sort itself out when I refill the tank and take the bike for a ride - I just can't do it until I have the bike back together for other reasons. Its the only thing stopping me from confirming that the process has worked 100% in my case. The dealers use a different tool for recalibrating the strip than I have which is a GS911 but I have no idea of any procedural differences between the two ref filling up afterwards. I can't see that any delay between recalibration and filling the tank would make a difference. If it does I will report back, hopefully this w/end.

It works! Put about 4 litres of fuel in the tank and the range to go reset itself to 78 miles. Lower two bars showing on the gauge. Took the bike out and brimmed the tank which took just under 25 litres. The fuel gauge reset after about 30 seconds to show all bars on the gauge and a range of 408 miles. Proof I guess is to see if the gauge goes down in roughly a linear pattern but I'm happy. Still, will only fully trust the trip.

ok so would this work, knackered fuel strip, empty tank totally, fit a brand new fuel strip, have some gerry cans at hand ,then refil the tank to the top ,start the bike and ride it ,and after a short ride it should reset its self ,as ,as said the new strip is calibrated from new to the tank being empty.
does this make sense.:nenau

It's the computer that gets calibrated to the strip not the strip that gets calibrated. That's why the dealer used the BMW diagnostics to set it and Beemerman an used the 911. It doesn't take long to do but you need the kit to do it properly.

ok ,but it was jeff that said he had been told by the dealer that the strip had been calibrated to empty before fitting.
cheers

ok thanks :thumb,to be honest the only reason i was asking is because a few months ago i had my fuel strip changed at a dealer ,it did come with a two year guarantee but should it pack up again ,i was wondering if i could do myself without the use of a gs911 .:thumb2

If the strip is knackered, there's nothing that can fix it, other than maybe the piezo trick - it will need to be replaced. If however, it still "works" but is just inaccurate, it can be re-calibrated by your dealer or someone with a GS911.

You can certainly replace it but empty might not be empty if you know what I mean. It should be consistent though with a new strip even if uncalibrated.

Good God. I've had 2 RT's, 1 virtually brand new & currently have a brand new GSA. None of them have ever reset themselves that quickly. The 1st RT was pretty good, the 2nd RT took up to 2 hours to reset itself (despite numerous trips to the dealer to remedy the problem) & my current GSA takes 20-30 minutes.

Mine's always reset the gauge quickly when filling up, always before I've driven off the forecourt - but it is a red GSA so the fast one :D

Do you have the computer on your bike? If this is not reset, it may take quite a while for the fuel to set to the right level - if I reset everything the remaining mileage settles to a sensible figure quite quickly, otherwise it could be 45mins into the ride before it makes any real sense.
