Just ordered a new GSA 1200 Anniversary. Quetsion is do I go for the enduro 1st gear. It will not be used off road at all but I heard that it may good for two up "in town" riding. Any views?

TIA

This question has been asked several times before.

I refer you to my previous answer:

Possibly not a problem, more a design feature.
<hr style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> When BMW launched the 1200 Range, they raised the first gear ratio to where second was on the 1100.
They lowered top gear to a point where the bikes rev their nuts off.
In short, they fitted a close ratio 5 and a half speed speed gearbox.
(6th is the 5 and a half)
If you are circuit racing or drag racing, it is superb.
If however, you are just using the bike for normal, everyday use, it is a pain in the arse.
Bike has no overdrive for long distance work, forever needing gearchanging because of the close ratios, and, worst of all, a first gear so high that the clutch smokes if you have to take off on a hill with a passenger.
Police bikes have a lower first gear, because the police would not accept the crazy first ratio provided as standard, and some bikes (Adventures?) may now be ordered with the same lower ratio.

Now: does all this fit with your "problem"?

yes it does thanks

I did search but you are a better man than i am - not a challenge - if you can find something which answesr withot endless, fruitless trawling

thanks though:thumb2

Don't even go there if not using off road...i used my standard road box off road in wales up steep hills in first gear and and its fine..The speeds you do 2up around town will be faster than off road anyway.
Hope this helps your choice..

I can't see what the disadvantage is of ordering the low 1st gear. It still slots nicely into 2nd (it's not a crawler gear that's doing 8000 rpm before 2nd is usable) and it may save wear and tear on your clutch, in town/city traffic, at steep hill starts / junctions, and anywhere with a pillion on / loaded up.

It is also useful off road if you're doing trials sections but I've only used mine on dirt roads / sand / gravel / mud / rivers so far and I was mostly going too fast to use any flavour of 1st gear. But that's still not a reason to get the std 1st gear if you can choose the low 1st gear.

In short, no disadvantages, and quite a few advantages, why wouldn't you ?

After having the standard gear box i would go for the enduro option
Two up on on a hill it would be a big advantage

I've got it

and I like it. Went over Applecross a few weeks back with my mate who was riding a 1200GSA with a standard box. Whilst he was feathering the clutch on the hairpins, I was able to just stick the bike in first and get on with it. It's also great for city centre riding.

I like the low first and I rarely go off road.

I'd also like the longer 6th too, but the 1150 adventures don't have it.

I've got to confess:( .... I kind of poo-pooed the idea on an earlier thread..but having just done 3,000 miles around mostly single track up-and-down hairpin infested roads...I'd have the low first like a shot........:augie

Dont bother with the low 1st gear, i have it on my new 2010 GSA. I am a tad of a loony offroad, and i prefered my old 2008 GSA with standard box.
When offroad if your slipping the clutch that much then you have problems i see, the box on my 2010 bike is so close in each gear that when you boot it up a gravel track or road your constantly changing gear, the 5th & 6th gear there is nothing between them.
Offroading a GSA most people wont venture past a gracel track or a green lane. If you up for all out mud bogging then the low first gear might help as you can just let the bike plug through it. But for everyday steer clear.

so if you can ride flat out all the time you don't need it but if you ride on greenlanes with horses, ramblers and landrovers or ever intend going into a town or city center or filtering or just riding day to day then its a nice option, second up is the same

Thanks for all that - ordered with enduro 1st gear on balance as most seem to favour it on here, Pick it up on the 24th July so will report back

Thanks again

Momentum is key..just gas it hey..

Excellent for town work, and no real bigger gap to second. I've got it, and if i ordered a new bike, would def have it again. No reason not to have it.
