After much consideration, I'm finally at the stage where a deposit is soon to go down on a 2010 GSA.....:drool

....my only concern now...the one which has probaby delayed the purchase more than all other...

....is whether to go for the enduro gearbox or not. :nenau

The trouble is actually trying one out to see what they are like....so you'll only find out if you've made the right choice on the day you pick up the new bike....

....and by then it might be too late. :blast

So my question is....

.....has any enduro box owners regreted the decission when picking up their new bike?...or has everyone been pleased with the choice?

I must admit I've not heard anyone who has got it say anything negative about it.

.....just for reference...I only wanted the enduro box for slow speed manouvability...not for off-road use.

All replies gratefully received. :thumb2

I would say go with the Enduro box, it is about 10% lower in first gear only, it means that you can be a little more controlled at very slow speed with less need to feather or slip the clutch.

I think the GS is a little high in first (thats not to say it is a problem with the std box) and the enduro option makes it a bit more easy going.

Just my opinion as others will have theirs but if I was to order a new one tomorrow I would definitely go for the Enduro option again , I am on my second 1200 gs - the first was a 2006 GS with std box and the second is a 2009 GSA with enduro box.

I was glad to have mine (the enduro box that is) going up Porlock Hill yesterday, behind a bunch of sportsbikes all slipping clutches and wobbling around. Mind you, the Remus headers and Accelerator module helped just as much in my view on the low speed control.

Get it, its free....

I got the enduro box on my GSA by default (no choice here in Aust as far as I know - they all come that way, GS might have the choice...).

Anyway - I'd be happier if it was 20% lower or even more, rather than just 10%. I reckon it's still too highly geared for first and I'd hate to think what the standard box is like.

Go for the Enduro.

Do you have a 1200GS at the moment?

If so, have you often felt the need for a lower first gear ratio? If yes, chose it at as an option on your new bike.

If no, don't.

Go for it, I had a GSA -08 without it and missed it every time I had to start in a slope or in traffic with luggage, also its great when going up or down a bad gravelroad (I now have a new -10 with it :clap ).

I was considering the enduro box when i ordered mine because i felt i could have done with it on my 06 GSA, but after the test ride on the 2010 i didn't think it was worth the wait. The 2010 for me, is much more controllable at low speed on the standard box than the 06 ever was.

Still thinking about getting a new bike, but rode both of them back to back, and for me its a no brainer, take the enduro box. If you do any town riding at all it will make life so much easier.

If you have something constructive to say?.......

....then say it.

If you don't.....

Then say nothing.

Thanks for all the constructive opinions and advice chaps.

The reasons for looking at the enduro option was for slow speed manouverability....mainly on trips abroad, when fully laiden.

On several occassions I've thought of the beneifits the lower gear would give....especially when pulling away up mountain passes.

I'm going to plump for the enduro I think....subject to the delay for delivery...but even then I think it would be worth the wait.

Thanks fellas.

Speaking from experience:

- Its the sort of thing you don't know you need until you have had it.
- The salesmen generally don't know the first thing about it and are unlikely to have ridden a bike with this gear box (and a bit like most folks on this forum).
- Its a god-send when it comes to filtering as it means more time off the clutch in heavy traffic.
- Makes quite a difference off road and on steep bits.
- Is only about 10% lower than the normal first gear, is noticeable, but could do with being a bit lower.
- Yes it may effect your get away at the lights a bit, but if you are bothered about that perhaps you are on the wrong bike.

There you go.

You answered YES and added a why, too.

You probably didn't need to ask the question as you had already arrived at an answer yourself.

Enjoy your new bike when it arrives.

I asked, because I wanted the opinions of those who had actually ridden a GSA
with an enduro gearbox, and who have owned one...and there opinion of its worth.....not an unreasonable request, or unusual motive for asking such a question.

.....just because it holds no interest to you is really not my concern...or the resulting superior reply.

The views expressed have helped me, or will help me, make my decission....that's why I asked it.

Yes, ultimately it is my decission....but with the help of my fellow GSers it will be a balanced one.

Go in peace....as some might say.

I did not like the taller 1st gear so as the enduro box was free I thought I would try it
And I must say that it make the bike much more essayer to use at lower speeds on and of road .
2000 miles of pure fun . just do it you know you wont One
and its worth the waiting time :thumb:thumb

I did find it quite interesting (not least as you had answered your own question here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=221941&highlight=enduro) but more particularly as there are other threads where some say it is not worth it unless the rider is going off-road on a regular basis. Of course they may not have ridden one (just as enduro box owners may not have ridden a conventional box) so their opinion may not count for much. Post #14 of http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=221941&highlight=enduro was also illuminating, then #21 when the doubts creep in; though the few replies on here seem to have done the trick of confirmiing what you already knew you needed.

It's odd perhaps that many posters deride the mag's for expressing an opinion over a bike on test (often with comments about brown nosing to advertisers) yet similar opinions on the internet are accepted, frequently without question.

You had formed your opinion based on the need for less frequent clutch slipping and a burning smell on mountain hairpins, something that you knew a lower ratio should address. What would you have done had the replies said, don't bother? Changed your opinion? The hairpins wouldn't have changed, that is for certain.

Why not ask if a fellow UKGSer will let you have a crack on theirs? It's the only real way to find out if you like it. I would lend you a go on mine (had I got one) - on a you bend it, you pay basis - but there are not many hairpins in London, plenty of traffic though.

Keep safe.

Wapping.....it is probably better that I don't reply to your post, as you are right in what you say, that everyone has got an opinion.....it is just a shame that you think that yours is always right, regardless of anyone else's, as yours is so much obviously superior.

....and I really don't care for how that air of superiority is delivered...or in fact, just haven't got the time to be bothered with it tonight.

So before this wholly justified thread disintergrates into one of those (many) threads that turns into one of your crusades to prove yourself to always be right...obviously allowing for the fact that no matter what points are raised in its course, that you will have the last word...cos of course you are the Oracle of all knowledge.

So before it becomes the 'Wapping Show' once again I think some other of us lesser mortals get a chance to talk about enduro boxes if they wish.....

....if they don't....then I apologise for cluttering up the GS1200 technical section with my mindless babbling.

Sorry Wapping....but I just can't be arsed with you!

I'd Go for it ,my Se is a standard box as there was no option and the only thing I'd change is that 1st gear ratio for day to day riding. In traffic you end up slipping the clutch a bit ,and loaded up definitley it would be worth it.Thats why for lots of round town work I use the T Max or the XR!! The XR can hold 30mph in 6th gear!!:D

DB - I am only very new to this forum, but I have been alarmed at the tone of a significant number of posters who seem to find it highly entertaining to demean the original poster.

No inference here to Wapping at all - who posts on many and varied topics - but quite a number of them are unfriendly and belittling. Maybe they are trying to be funny....

I belong to quite a few forums; Land Rover; Alfa; BMW; AdvRider; and so on. The mods on these forums would not tolerate some of the replies I have seen here. I bet BigDerek wishes he never thought to post his "oil" thread.

The tone here discourages me from posting. I spend a lot of time reading through posts trying to find information, whereas on other forums I'd just post away.

Anyway - I can see where you are coming from.

Cheers
David
