i am wanting to clean the engine block on the R80 project.

i can clean up the sections i can easily remove, i.e starter cover, front cover etc, but i am concerned about removing the cylinders etc for a full strip down to allow vapour blasting. With that in mind what can i use to clean the block, are there any chemical preparations out there to help?

cheers

Try jizer let it soak in then use hot water to wash it down bloody good stuff ! your pic funniest on the g.s website look like a mad man having a nightmare:pullface p.s have to do it a few times on the engine don't ever sand blast the engine !

Petrol works good as well

engine cleaning

Be very carefull if cleaning with any abrasive and pressure, as sometimes the abrasive can embed itself in the ally, then thinking you have washed it all out you put the casings together only for the engine to heat up and expand when running, then the abrasive embeded loosens, ending up in the oil line hence one fooked up engine.

i had had a vapour blaster and still have my ultrasonic cleaner. Fantastic cleaning solution but there's no way I'd vapour blast a crankcase, the beads get everywhere, the bm cases have so many blind oil ways and nooks and crannies it's very difficult to clear them out. A phosphoric acid wash works for me.

This engine had the cases acid washed followed by an alkaline rinse to neutralise the acid. Heads and barrels were vapour blasted and then ultrasonically cleaned

Is there a way or process of cleaning the 'main block' part of the engine without having to strip it all down? The barrels and heads will be vapour blasted but with my limited engine skills I don't want to feck it up!

Can the outside just be blasted or cleaned( assuming the pistons are blocked off

Just Clean the block before removing the top end.

Pretty good results can be achieved with the simple methods mentioned and loads of elbow grease.

I too would not let any abrasive blasting near my cases.

i sandblasted a complete guzzi engine and gearbox prior to spraying it satin black.

Taped everything up with HD duct tape - no worries - worked a treat.

Saved stripping it down for no reason

I am soda blasting the motor and gearbox unit in one piece after blanking all the holes off, allso soda is much kinder than beads ext so we should be good, and its water soluble so any last bits will wash off in warm water :thumby:
thats the plan anyway,i will post before and after images for you chaps

if I was not wanting to strip the engine,i would use a strong deagreaser anda proper steam cleaner.
a lot of cleaning solutions will send the alloy black or dull it.
vapour or aqua blasting is the way to go but you have to KNOW that no abrasives have found a way in
I wouldn't risk blasting an engine without a full strip/clean.IMO.
