Engine braking

Hi - new to this forum and have a question about engine braking on my 05 R1200 GS.

I get the idea that these can be a bit agricultural but mine seems incredibly hard to ride slowly especially in first gear. It has about 26,000 miles on it and I’ve had if for about the last 1,500 of them so it should be well run in.

As I close the throttle the deceleration from engine braking is what I would expect from a big twin but on the last tiny bit of throttle movement, just before its shut right off, it’s like I’ve hit the kill switch and the engine braking suddenly jolts me forward, a lot. The engine never stalls though so I don’t think it is an ignition thang.

It’s pretty much the same in all gears, (engine braking…, engine braking…, engine braking..., ENGINE BRAKING) but obviously is much more noticeable in first.

This makes riding in traffic real hard work with loads of clutch play to try and keep any sort of smoothness. It may be me but my last couple of bikes (CCM 644 and VTR 1000) both had loads of engine braking but were smooth in these conditions and nothing like the GS.

Any ideas, before my back is completely shot from all the sudden jolts ???????????

Mick.

Mine is like that too... (as you say... it is a 1200 twin)...

At first I found myself gliding through slow sections (my housing estate) with the clutch in I was so rough with the throttle....

But I am now at the point where I don't allow the throttle to move where I don't want it to... and It's mostly fine.

My 05 is ok-ish, i think it could well be the two throtle bodies are a tad out of sync, had mine done the last service and all is now sweet-ish...Well not peerrrfic but 100% better. Enjoy...if you are new to BM's you will get used to it then ask why did it take me so long get here...

I recently removed my battery and in the haynes manual it states that after you replace the battery, do the following procedure. Switch the bike on. Before you start it, open and shut the throttle a couple of times, this will reset the throttle sensors,
I think that your throttle sensors may be out of sync, so try to disconnect your battery and follow that procedure. it will reset the sync points and hopefully solve your problem.

1,500 miles on a 1200 flat twin isn't much to learn its idiosycrasies, I tend to think your letting the revs get too low,

Have you got the lower First Gear option? :nenau

My first 1150 GSA was a nightmare to ride smoothly in 1st gear - IIRC it had the low 1st gear option - designed for more off road use.

There's only one, and it's got nowt to do with synchronisation. It won't solve his problem.
