Any reason why a 99 850r wouldn't engine brake as well as it used to? Just curious if you have any suggestions of things to check for? Is there a way to clean out cable assemblies without then having to bring back to BMW? I'd say it's something simple but post service, the bike is totally different and I'm not entirely happy with the end results. Help appreciated:nenau

Good news is I'm looking into a GS1150A

From the comment "post service" I'd guess that it's not long back from the dealer.

1) Maybe they've cranked up the tickover. Does it still idle at the same revs?
2) Maybe they've freed off the previously binding brakes. Would you have noticed if they were dragging?
3) Maybe the fast idle control is stuck at fast. Does the idle speed ramp up and down as the control is moved between the "off", "cold", and "very cold" position?

Yes not long back. I'm trying to self service but due to fuel injector problem (made much worse by my trying to sync bike) I sent it back to be balanced. Fuel injector replaced under warrantee.

Tickover when warm is now at a constant and stable 1100rpm.

the way you say previous binding brakes makes me wonder if you know me and the bike! There is a good chance the brakes were binding a bit but they are no longer binding. I've recently cleaned the pots with ethanol and greased them slightly with coppergrease. The pin was cleaned and greased too. I wouldn't have noticed if they were dragging but the 'engine braking' I'm referring to didn't seem like brake drag. IMO, if I take my hand off the throttle, the bike should slow right down, especially in second and third.

3) Maybe the fast idle control is stuck at fast. Does the idle speed ramp up and down as the control is moved between the "off", "cold", and "very cold" position?[/SIZE]

Your losing me a bit here. I'll assume cold is 'in the middle' and 'very cold' is when you hold it over to the right??? Mine has no markings. Anyway, when I move it, the rev's increase but not nearly as much as they used to.

Right. Fine.

I've subscribed and hoped for more responses. FFS IT's christmas. An 850 may be small but it's jsut teh boring on the the cylinders and a few other tweeks out from the litre models. maybe you've all read me wrong. Maybe it's 'cos I'm irish and you think I'll come over and BOMB your bike if you give me bad information:eek: :topic

I'm just posting 'cos I just wanna talk about the boxer engine and how the thing works. I've got an interesting one:handbag. I fiddle and I deal with the consiquences. Lotta shite talk on here IMO (along with lots of great information) and it's VERY CLICKY.

Sorry I don't have a gs kids but I was kinda hoping for a few more responses so I could get to be the person you are:augie Totally in control of your motorcycle and all eventualities. Never mind that it's a beautiful engine and when it's right, its' RIGHT:D

Cheers for everything:thumb2

Hi Flatnuckles - I've got a GS but I don't mind talking to you :D

Packer has covered all the obvious points and it sounds that you may have had some fueling probs which would affect your bike's running. when I had my blackbird I noticed the engine seemed a lot more responsive when I changed to Shell Optimax and seemed to have less engine breaking :nenau

Only other thing I can think off ...... you didn't use to give a big fat bird a lift and now she has gone off and left you :nenau cos she would have given you a lot of braking effect :D

I can't think of much else Flatknuckles unless the old air filter was well knackered and increasing the effect of engine breaking.

Try riding it for a few hundred miles and see how you get on with it then.

Report back before breakfast tomorrow:D:thumb2
