Engine Cut Out

:beerjug: Cheers - I'd be interested to know if this is a permanent fix? Was it a BMW dealer that has said that they no longer recomend Bosch plugs? Seems a strange fix to me, but if it works :thumb2

Done 300 miles since the fix ,no problems . The bike went to a BMW dealer ,in Alton .

The plugs used on my 1200 are NGK DCPR8EKC, probably cheaper to buy from a UK supplier like sparkplugs.co.uk at £3.49 each.

Interesting, when my 2006GSA was very new (pre first 6k), I had a few occasions where it exhibited this sort of problem ... never did get to the bottom of the problem, but two up and fully loaded with luggage it concentrated the mind once in particular ;-)

Recently (mid 30k's) the old issue resurfaced two or three times in daily riding, but as it went in for service a week or two later and was OK since, I put it down to needing servicing --- have to check what plugs Mike put in at the service.

I've also just replaced my FPC for the first time last week, so had started to believe that it may be intermittent problems there.

i have a rt 1200
and sync'd throttle bodies .it make a massive difference when there r right
my rt has 98823 miles and runs sweet:D
just my 1150 :augie
oh
when the dealer services the bike we alaways check for update and upload when possible:augie

Engine Cut Out Again

Well, I've been out for a run today and it's happened again.

This time accelerating and changing up to 3rd gear, clutch in, power gone, engine dead. Speed obviously dropped and I kicked it from 3rd thru 2nd to neutral. I tried to rev the engine but it was dead.

Hit the starter button, 1st time nothing, 2nd time it revved to life. Rode a couple of miles and pulled in to check it over. Switched off and then tried to restart, started with difficulty with revs, but died on tickover and continued to do so a couple of times then it just would not start at all, it tried to turn over but would not fire.

Great weather today though :augie

Into the dealers for a few days and i'll let you all know.
I know people like photo's so for those of you that are interested here is a lovely shot of the hills around Sickleholme Service Station, Hope Valley, Derbyshire.

Why is this common fault still occuring?? :nenau

BWM could save themselves (and ultimately their customers) a fortune in recovery agents fees if they could design a proper solution.

Done within an hour with the new part.

Recall or done under service campaign would solve the problem...... :rob

Is a new part or just a replacement? Worringly I note that yours is the latest model as I am still running my new one in. Had FPC failure on last GS which was one of the reasons that it was changed.
Did the dealer fit the plastic shroud? I kept mine from the older bike will fit it tonight me thinks.
Reported this problem to VOSA through this website, have received response from VOSA so worth doing.

I understand it was a brand new part (black type I think the mech said )

Don't know about the plastic shroud, and they wouldn't give me the old part, has to go back to BMW.

A running in problem or FPC

This problem of stalling when changing down is happening on my brand new 2010 GS. Nasty moment when it first happened at 10mph approaching a roundabout and I let out the clutch hoping to bump start but locked up the rear for a slithery second. It has happened 5 times in 240 miles, 4 times within first 2 miles of start up but also once in the middle of a 15 mile run. It also stalls at stand still just after re starting whether cold or warmed up when I blip the throttle open and let in run down on a closed throttle it just stops after the revs drop to tickover. Other times you hear a slight pause and it recovers to tickover. Otherwise seems to be running ok but hard to tell what I should be expecting in terms of riding pick up etc when the bike is so new. I will be calling service at southport superbikes when they open - apparently closed tommorow ???? and have been assured of full support. But after reading the thread above and other threads I am worried.
Apparently it is a safety hazard, not very well understood by dealers, sometimes goes away after running in, could be lamba sensor or FPC - but on a 2010 ???.

Norm, Zoltan was your problem solved eventually ?

Any other thought/s experiences appreciated, especially from people with the 2010 engine.

I was down at Ocean on Fri picking up a new GS - where they said this "cutting-out" is now a known problem on some 2010 bikes. They are awaiting a fix from BMW. My mate has had this happen several times on a new GSA in the first 300 miles.

Thanks for the reply Gateway. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that this is on the BMW radar screen. My dealer told me initially that they had sold dozens of bikes with the new engine and had heard of no problems until mine although they are ready to help.

:comfort

Because it's v. quick and easy to do, I'd try a TPS reset in case it's simply the computer getting confused about the throttle position

2010 engine recall ?

Thanks Rick I tried this but the problem of shutting down on a down change happened again twice after a petrol stop for 10 min. then ok for next 50 miles. this time it didn't just shut off suddenly from tickover revs but coughed and spluttered from a higher revs point on the overun until the engine stopped running. Was able to immediately restart while rolling with the clutch in. I am also finding that when I try to blip the throttle on a down change sometimes it just sort of farts rather than pick up smoothly/ quickly

spoke with Ocean BMW service guy and he said they were aware of the problem on 2 others 2010 engines, one of them an RT. He said BMW were working towards a recall related to the overhead cams but needed to get dealer tooling in place. Not sure if this going to help with my problem.

Southport superbikes are collecting my 4 day old bike tomorrow from home 80 miles away which is good of them.

Any comments most welcome.

My 2010 GSA is a month old (quite a few miles on the clock already), but I've not suffered from anything like this. I'll bear it in mind though and will let you know if there's a hiccup! :thumb
