Took mine for a 6,500 mile trip in August. When the air was hot and very dry (mountains/sun) the bike didn't stall. As soon as it got humid or wet (seaside/rain) it did. Left the PC5 off in the end as that made it worse. I presume some component is susceptible to interference from water or humidity but hasn't yet failed, so nothing is showing up on diagnostics. FPC has been replaced by BMW and I installed a new TPS before leaving, so it's neither of those things.

I've now clocked up 42,000 miles on a brilliant bike that keeps stalling, presumably because of one small bloody fault that nobody can pinpoint. Even Steptoe is stumped! :nenau

It is really difficult to try and work out what causes this. When I fitted a Wunderlich Power Controller to my Remus/ Akra /K&N combination the bike ran well with no sign of stalling. Then I took the baffle out of the Akra and the damn thing died about 6 times on one 100 mile ride. I put the baffle back in and it has'nt died since although it has "hiccupped" a couple of times. But before I fitted the controller the engine would sometimes stall irrepective of the combination I was running on the exhaust. Always the same way - changing from third to second when slowing down. It is certainly better now with the Controller than it ever was before (including an Accelerator module) but running with baffle out was horrible. I'm going to adjust the clutch lever next to see if that makes any difference to the hiccups.

Whatever that all means I don't have a clue.

Started again. Died twice yesterday; once while filtering on the M40 which is not an experience I wish to repeat. One other thing I have noticed is the starter is very reluctant to turn afterwards - almost as if the battery is flat - and the fuel gauge usually drops a bar each time. :duno

Once stalled, mine won't start until I put it into neutral but I'm now wondering if I have a dodgy clutch switch as well, since I can't start the bike at all now when it's in gear even without stalling the engine. Mine's the same as yours in that when trying to restart the engine straight away after a stall the battery feels as if it's quite flat, however, leave it for 5 seconds or so to restart alls back to normal. GS911 has not picked up any faults so I have a new clutch switch on the way from Motorworks. If that works, at least it will be easier to start the engine after a stall without having to find neutral while negotiating traffic.

Same here, though my technique is to recycle the ignition, then it starts straight away. That can be tricky in traffic, but it's a good test of one's nerve!

I, too, have recently found that it often won't start in gear with the clutch pulled in, so please do report back on whether replacing the switch makes a difference.

Well, the clutch interlock switch was kaput, so have installed a new switch. Hopefully I can at least start the bugger in gear now when it stalls, although, having said that, it has'nt stalled for a while.

Hi

Any conclusions on this. I have a 2008 1200gsa, had this problem, mainly when doing a casual coast change down, usually 3 to 2 or 2 to 1. Bike is bog standard.

Mentioned it to mike at BVM Stroud but nothing on diagnostics in spring when the bike was last serviced.

I had problems last autumn, this spring and it's just starting again now. So colder and damp seems to be perhaps a theme.

In terms of restart once it's happened. Clutch in, with me I am usually still rolling when it dies. So I keep clutch fully in, press starter button - either nothing or a pissy attempt to start. Next release start button, with some throttle hold start button and after nothing for a second or two whilst it makes it's mind up the bike leap's into life.

Have read quite a few threads but no conclusion as yet.

Anyone with anymore thoughts ?

There's been no conclusion that's the problem. Mine has been much better since I fitted a Wunderlich Power Controller to increase the fuelling and put the baffle back into the Akropovic rear can but you can go months without an issue and then it randomly does it.

2010 Twin cam GSA, 22600 miles, just started doing it, 3 times in a week now....... It cut out at traffic lights just as I pulled up???? :nenau

Thanks Beemerman,

Guess just live with it, when the bike starts doing it - I just make sure I don't spend too much time in the coast when changing down and blip the throttle between gear changes - bit overkill but at least it means I don't end up in the middle of a junction with a dead bike (I have a left turn into a T junction and an immediate right to get into my house and the sod does it when it is playing up just as I nick it into 1st to perform the right and end up on a dead bike in a very strange road position - Great!).

Will keep an eye on the forum and I guess we have to wait for someone to have a nasty accident with this fault before BMW will start to think about how they will fix it.!

The problem with the blip approach, unless it becomes complete habit, is that the bike lulls you into a false sense of security and then springs it on you when you had forgotten about it and leaves you between two rows of traffic on the M40. :)

Matt at NOG is putting pressure on BM to get an answer but no joy so far. The strange thing is at the moment it has stopped doing it and I can't even force it to do it (which I used to be able to do every so often). Pull the clutch now and the RPM drops straight back to idle with no show of dropping below. Weather is a bit cooler, I've been able to ride the bike a bit more recently, the idle seems smoother so possibly better balanced. Nothing else has changed as far as I can tell.

Mine too

I have an 08 GSA I can pretty much get it to do it whenever I want. It is when coasting in second and then braking using front brake and pulling the clutch insay up to a set of lights....
30000 miles full Bmw dealer service history
Remus headers
Akrapovic end can
Dynijet power commander with custom map
High flow air filter.

The bike has run these items since day 1 and never had any problems till thi year????

I'm currently moving and due a baby so can't afford for BMW to look at it for hrs and say they don't know , but there's your 300 pound bill :-)

Citroens do it too

Also on a different note a mate of mine who is a Citroen dealer reckons that many vitrines used to do it and that the steppers just needed taking out and given a good clean!!! Anyone know where they are found on GSA?? I'll try anything...

A message to all reading this thread.....

my 06 with 85k km on the clock was showing many signs, ecspecially when cold....of cut out, lumpy tick over....groggy at low revs....I was convinced it was electronics and maybe gas sensors.... I replaced the plugs (all four at 5 quid each from nippy normans) and all problems solved.

Easy cheap fix, and definately worth trying BEFORE you shell out big bucks for BuMW to look at the bike...unless you are still under warranty.

Even though my bike had been main dealer serviced until 45k nobody had ever changed the plugs.
