Sometimes when I get stuck in a traffic jam in warm weather the engine oil temperature gets warmer, up to the high marking of the column. In such situation I use to turn off the engine and push the bike aside. Do I worry too much? Has anyone heard about engine damage under such circumstances? 😐

The engine will cope as it is designed that way. I have seen my temperature gauge go quite a bit north
in 40 degree C temperatures without any harm.

You are fine mate but if you know you will be stopped for a while, just turn her off.

I've regularly seen 49c on outside temp guage with no problems.

I as stuck in nose to tail traffic in Ajacio on Corsica last year in 38 degree temps. The temp gauge was all the way to the top but there was nothing I could do. I was just about to pull over and switch off but we started to move. It clattered and pinked a little but settled down and was fine once I got moving and got some air over the engine / oil cooler.

As a side note to this, last year I was in a long queue on a very hot day to get into a Yosemite NP car park when a ranger came along saying, " you air cooled?" Yes I said and he directed me to the front of the queue immediately :thumb2:D

Nice :thumb2
He must be used to Harleys dieing in the heat ;)

I once got stuck in traffic on my twincam GSA while trying to negotiate my way around Chicago City. The temp gauge was off the scale in the heat and I just had to cope with it. No damage done.

It later gave me confidence in Death Valley where the recorded temperature at Furnace Creek was 118 degrees. The bike was in better shape than me that day.

The oil will be fairly scorched after some sustained high temperature running.

Thanks for your responses! I see you face much hotter weather than I who live in Finland. Now returning from a one week journey in northern Russia.
