Engine Noise

Thank you "Wapping" for your serious attempt to answer my question. Your summary was largely correct but to confirm it in a similar format:

Engine noise normal at cold start.
Rattle begins as it warms up underway.
At normal temp, more pronounced under load that on overrun.(Slowish, traffic speeds)
As extra info:
Overall performance is as expected (using Dyna Mode always)
Yes I intend to do a hearing/riding comparison but don't know how many.

Seems I also started "which is the quieter engine air or water" with opinions on both sides!

Thanks again

A higher CR of 12.5 :1, peakier cams, and race type pistons with tiny skirts, all help to make this motor clatter along quite nicely and I don't care 'cos the way it delivers it's creamy wallop of KTM beating low down overtaking grunt is more than good enough to keep me grinning all day long! :aidan :weights

I guess many of you gentlemen must be spring chickens and far far younger than myself as "I remember as a lad back in the seventies" my old Franny B - Triumph Cub- C15- Tr6R to name but a few until I graduated to Japanese, made so much mechanical noise your parents heard you coming home before they could hear the exhaust note......in some cases What exhaust!
My dad checked his drive for shiny bits of metal my bikes shed incase he picked up a puncture.
What I am saying is that the older we get the more picky, tetchy downright moany we get, remember your grandparents grumbling about everything including nextdoor and the weather?
All mechanical things chuck out noise and some more than others, probably due to lighter materials used to save weight, who knows. Either way ride you an 1100 1150 1200 (like me) or an LC ( which I also opted not to buy and bought an Aniv 90 GSA instead through preference ) or a Transalp I care not, because we all have one thing in common. We like getting cold and wet and scream in our helmets! Enjoy your rides and if it breaks someone on here will help you fix it.
That's me done....fire away.

My 1150 adv is quieter than my 1200 adv te which rattles like shit but also goes like shit of a shovel so I dont care.. it also has a warranty so it can feel free to make as much noise as it so wishes until goes bang then it can have a brand new rattly engine fitted and start the whole process again..! I love my brand new rattly bike :beerjug:

Interesting that my original thread has resurfaced. In another one on the same subject where I accepted the noise as standard, I reported the "cure" lay in the purchase of custom ear plugs. Very pleased with ACS full shell. by the way. The irritation, however, still remains in that no one in the two dealerships I have visited has been able or willing to identify the source. "It's coming up through the space round the fork stancions" or "The rocker boxes are very thin aluminium and they resonate" tells me why I hear it, not which component(s) produce it!
Ah well! I'll continue to enjoy my first BM since an R100RS (the last of the wire wheel ones) and the answer might eventually, like this thread, surface.

You'd be better off with a Honda VFR - sounds like a sewing machine and has as much personality.

I find if you push a set of ear plugs right inside your ear with a cotton bud, then fit a second set you can't hear feck all....
