I went off to check out a 94 'M' 1100 GS yesterday in a private sale.

I did the usual check out of everything paper, welds, tank, mechanicals but i could'nt find the engine number. The owner did'nt know where to find it either.

I walked away because of this, so can anyone give me the location please?

Stamped on a cast strip on the right hand side of the crankcase, below the cylinder barrel.

On a vertical cm wide flat strip, 3 inches long? Forward of right hand cylinder?

Looked on that no numbers to be seen! :nenau

And bloody hard to read. Stamping prolly full of road grime. May need to clean it back with a spark plug brush or similar then use something to highlight it. Not sure what, torch, maybe talc? Mine needed some serious cleaning before I could read it :)

They're not stamped, it looks more like it's etched - add a few years of ageing and it's quite normal to find nothing.

On the right-hand side. Near the cylinder.

If the VIN is ok and everything else satisfies you, don't worry about the absence of the engine number (it's not a legal requirement). It could be a replacement engine.

If it has no number just send off the V5 and ammend the engine number to none.

If the engine (once you find it) is different from that on the V5, make a note of it and either contact local police and ask if they can confirm it's not stolen or a BMW dealer should be able to tell you the original bike it came from.

If it's all ok and the number is different, again, just send of the V5 with the correct number.

engine number

Well i guess that would make sense as the bike concerned was a 94.

HPi showed up as ok

Thanks for your time gents
