Last week pulled up to refuel after 230 mile ride out the oil ok symbol appeared on the display filled up rode off approx 1mile noticed the oil pressure symbol on the display pulled over onto centre stand after 5 minutes the oil level was just below centre mark restarted no light. yesterday out again approx 120 miles after going up a 1 in 4 light came on again pulled over checked again level ok carried on another 100 miles no problems. the only thing i can say is the oil ok light doesnt seem to come on as often as it used to. any ideas.

With luck it's just a faulty oil pressure switch.

However, it's not wise to take that for granted and forget about it. Is the oil you are using the right grade or something very thin? Obviously the oil pressure is at it's lowest when the engine is only ticking over and engine hot such as may be the case after your hill climbing.

If the oil pressure is low enough to trigger the switch even momentarily, I guess the computer will flag the fault and light up the display until the pressure is again high enough to clear the fault.

Bottom line is that if the bike were mine I'd like to be sure the oil, and then the oil pressure in the system was up to spec'. I guess the second of those means a trip to a dealer.

I have just got back from Roy Gardners where he had a quick look at my bike and Whilst I was there he had three bm's in all with blown engines and all had their oil light come on. At the very least make sure your oil level is at max (I know there is tolerance with a minimum and maximum) but these bm's are notorious for using oil and I actually carry a litre bottle with me (granted I have a gsa1150) so I can top up if needed.

Checking the oil level is something I do on a weekly basis.

Best as well to get the dealer to check out the oil sensor too thought.

It's not a level indicator light but a pressure light, you can have all the oil you want but if the pressures not right it'll cost big time. Check the oil your using is the right spec, also when was the filter last changed? Also might be worth a look at the connector on the switch, any water and it could give a false indication. But bottom line if it was my bike it would have been recovered to the nearest dealer to make sure, engines are bloody expensive :(
