hi all,

I have an 09 GS and i'm just a fraction above the minimum level... so after having a look on this:

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106813

i have determined 20w50 mineral is the one...

however, after going to halfords to see if they had any, they only had this:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...uctId_166289_langId_-1_categoryId_165581#dtab

its been suggested that this is good stuff for the bike, but would someone please confirm/deny that for me before i go off and get it.

thanks

Eoghan

Before you get rounded on a by all and sundry by posting an oil question, your best bet is to check with your dealer as to the oil needed and take their advice. They sell it at the dealer so it's worth buying a litre at yoiur next visit.

You can mix oils between services with no problems if you are only topping up but when it's new, use mineral and move to semi synthetic as the mileage increases. The grade won't matter either.

It's basically a tractor engine and not a race bike so DO NOT WORRY;)

I'm guessing it's new so run it in hard and it won't use much oil through it's life.

As for checking the oil, make sure you are not overfilling it as this is a common cause of oil usage IMHO.

I also wouldnt use the Halfords Classic oil although Im sure a lot do but it doesnt meet the manufacturers minimum requirement of API SF or better

thanks for the info so far...

I always forget to include useful info when asking questions like this... the bike has done about 3,500miles since the 15th April when i got it... so has been run in...

And for god's sake, don't drink any. Or use it as an alternative to Soy Sauce, it just doesn't work.

I think there are a couple of online dealers that sell the castrol stuff much cheaper than the BMW dealers. Do a google search for the Castrol oil and it should come up with a few places.

oil

BMW now recommend you use fully synthetic engine oil?, guess what? you can only buy it from BMW dealers at £11.50 per litre.

Yep, spot on. It will not be run in until about 15,000 miles.

FWIW, I've used Halfords Classic engine in my 1100 with no problems whatsoever and it certainley quietened the old girl down. Must put some in the current Mrs Bilco's tea;)
